Review: BRENDA'S GOT A BABY, New Diorama Theatre
by Cindy Marcolina - Nov 9, 2023

Nouveau Riche and Jessica Hagan reunite after Queens of Sheba for a new comedy that explores the absurd pressures thrust upon women by society. A bad breakup and her family’s constant comparisons to her happily wedded younger sister push Ama to look into having a baby on her own. It’s nothing short of an odyssey. There’s plenty to like in Hagan’s writing, but this play is, unfortunately, incohesive and inconclusive.

BWW Review: CYRANO DE BERGERAC, Playhouse Theatre
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Dec 8, 2019

When you enter a theatre to a soundtrack of Stormzy and open the programme to see a Beatboxer listed on the credits, you know that this is probably not a traditional staging of a nineteenth century play. Much anticipation has been building for Martin Crimp's new adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac. Directed by Jamie Lloyd and starring James McAvoy, this magnificent show has stardust sprinkled all over it.

BWW Review: TWO TRAINS RUNNING, Nuffield Southampton Theatres
by Jo Fisher - Sep 19, 2019

It's Pittsburg, 1969, and the city's Hill District is far from the vibrant, bustling, jazz-soaked African-American neighbourhood it was in its prime. August Wilson's Two Trains Running brings a shabby diner in this threatened community to life, offering a window onto the lives of seven irregular regular customers and, ultimately, the state of America in the sixties.

Guest Blog: Actor Michael Salami On August Wilson's TWO TRAINS RUNNING
by Marianka Swain - Sep 5, 2019

Being cast in an August Wilson play feels like an honour; I studied his work at drama school. He is described as the black Shakespeare. His words and characters are so full of life - half my job feels done already. How he expresses the black experience feels so relatable even to this day.

BWW Review: KING LEAR, Duke of York's Theatre
by Laura Jones - Jul 27, 2018

Following on from a hugely successful run at Chichester, Sir Ian McKellen is back in the title role of King Lear, in the same theatre in which he made his West End debut in 1964. The Duke of York's is decidedly bigger than the Minerva, but with the addition of a walkway through the centre of the auditorium reducing the theatre capacity substantially, there's a much more intimate feel.

Following the success of Brute at Soho Theatre, Damsel Productions teams up again with award-winning writer Izzy Tennyson to present Grotty, a semi-autobiographical piece centred on East London's lesbian scene.
