The Belgrade Theatre Coventry has announced that a whole host of new shows for its 2021 Spring and Autumn Seasons are now on sale. Highlights include the return of Dirty Dancing, The Ruff Tuff Cream Puff Estate Agency, a co-production with Cardboard Citizens for Coventry UK City of Culture, and Mischief Theatre’s The Play That Goes Wrong.

Mr Wickham is best known as the villain of Jane Austen’s iconic novel Pride and Prejudice; a dastardly rake who seduced Elizabeth’s impetuous younger sister Lydia and threatened to bring the whole family into disrepute. Adrian Lukis, who played Wickham in the seminal 1994 BBC series, now returns to the character in Being Mr Wickham, a highly engaging one-man play, streamed live from the country’s last Regency theatre, the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds.

Can it really be more than a quarter-century since the BBC's Pride and Prejudice transfixed viewers, accelerating the shooting stars of Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth as Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, not to mention Adrian Lukis, in the choice supporting role of the caddish George Wickham? Since then, Lukis has appeared frequently onstage and screen and is returning to the stage in a solo play self-penned with author Catherine Curzon that argues the case for Jane Austen's celebrated rogue three decades on.

Written by Adrian Lukis and Catherine Curzon, this one-man play about one of Jane Austen's most charmingly roguish characters, will be directed by Guy Unsworth, designed by Libby Watson and filmed by Matt Hargraves and his team from North South Culture, who recently worked on the acclaimed streaming of Hymn at The Almeida.
