Review: MRS. LOMAN IS LEAVING at ACT
by Jay Irwin - Oct 18, 2024

Dear Readers, like many, I love a good rollicking backstage comedy. One of those plays within a play where we get to peek behind the stage and check out the antics happening beyond. The classic “Noises Off” for example has always been one of my favorites. Now, along comes this new work from Katie Forgette, 'Mrs. Loman is Leaving', currently at ACT, and while certainly having more than a few funny moments, for a show that makes it very clear to be focused on the oft forgotten Mrs. Loman, and women in general, the resolution of her story arc felt a bit rushed and unsatisfying.
Review: SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE PRECARIOUS POSITION at Taproot Theatre
by Jay Irwin - May 19, 2024

First off, Dear Readers, “Sherlock Holmes and the Precarious Position” currently playing at Taproot Theatre, is not a Holmes story from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It’s a silly little lark with Holmesian characters by Margaret Raether. The program even says, “Based on the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle”. Second, do not try and gleam anything from the title. I’m still not certain what the “Precarious Position” was. At least, not without really reaching for a connection. Having said that, this silly little lark was fairly fun, largely due to a cast that was having just as much fun. So, it’s not brilliant or life changing, but I will go so far as saying it’s gigglelicious.
Review: A CASE FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD at ACT
by Jay Irwin - Feb 9, 2024

If you’re unfamiliar with the playwright Samuel D. Hunter, Dear Readers, you shouldn’t be. His latest, “A Case for the Existence of God”, currently playing at ACT, isn’t the first of his we’ve seen in the area. We were blessed with his “A Great Wilderness” back in 2014, plus his “The Whale” which first got a workshop at the Icicle Creek Theatre Festival, not to mention it’s latest life as an Oscar winning film in 2022. His raw takes on modern lives are exhilarating and his current production at ACT is no different.

Review: SHERWOOD: THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD at Village Theatre
by Jay Irwin - Sep 22, 2023

Author Ken Ludwig has certainly had a prolific career filled with some wonderful gems, “Crazy for You”, “Lend Me a Tenor”, and “Moon Over Buffalo” to name just a few. So, Village Theatre’s new production of his 2017 work, “Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood” sounds like a rollicking good time. Unfortunately, this new retelling of a classic adventure meanders about awkwardly not knowing what it wants to be. And that’s just one of the two big problems of a production that just laid there hoping the audience would find something funny in it.

BWW Review: MAMMA MIA! at Village Theatre
by Jay Irwin - Jun 11, 2022

I am aware, Dear Readers, that for some the ABBA jukebox musical “Mamma Mia” is not for them. Maybe they aren’t fans of ABBA or maybe they just don’t like fun but whatever the case, I can unabashedly state that I am NOT one of them.
BWW Review: SEE HOW THEY RUN at Taproot Theatre
by Kelly Rogers Flynt - Jan 30, 2022

In a world full of conflict, division, and uncertainty, there is a lot to worry about. As the pandemic continues, we wonder if we will ever get back to normal. It’s been a very hard couple of years and now more than ever, I’m feeling the need for a reprieve - just a moment to forget all of the outside problems and things beyond my control. I have a deep-seeded need to just laugh. Taproot Theatre’s first show of 2022 just might be the tonic we all need. SEE HOW THEY RUN reminds us that laughter really is the best medicine.
