Jaylene Clark Owens BIO

Jaylene Clark Owens is an AUDELCO-winning actress, successful producer, director, and a highly acclaimed spoken word poet, from Harlem, New York City. Owens received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Acting from Ithaca College in 2010. Some of her theatre credits include Eurydice (Big Stone); The Exonerated (Georgia); Black Girl (Mama Rosie). Her most recent work includes playing Peaseblossom in Classical Theatre of Harlem's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. She was recently a Producing Associate and member of the Marketing Team for the revival of the Obie Award winning play, The Great MacDaddy. In the poetry world Owens has many accomplishments and is still striving for more. She is a first place Apollo Theater Amateur Night winner for her spoken word poetry and a Super Top Dog Amateur Night Finalist. She has won numerous spoken word competitions including the 2005 Urban Word Slam, 2005 Brave New Voices International Poetry Slam, and 2006 New York Knicks Poetry Slam to name a few. She has shared the stage with greats such as Nikki Giovanni, Arrested Development, and Dead Prez. Her poem, "Detrimental to My Success," is published in "Falling Hard: 100 Love Poems by Teenagers," edited by Betsey Franco. Owens is the former president and founder of Spit That!, a poetry organization on the Ithaca College campus that still thrives today.

Audience Member Disrupts Production of PASSAGE with Racist Remark

According to Philly.com, an audience member interrupted a performance of the play Passage at the Wilma Theater in Center City Thursday night. Jaylene Clark Owens, an actress in the production, was performing a scene that included a white actor (Ross Beschler) and Filipino actor (Justin Jain), when a man interrupted loudly, referencing Forrest Gump in a racially-charged comment.
