BWW Review: PIPPIN at The Firehouse Theater

Firehouse Theater once again takes a bite of a huge show with Pippin - and though at time it felt like more than the space was prepared to chew, some great comedic timing and a strong supporting cast make the evening a fun one.

The Firehouse Theatre (2016 BWW Award for Best Theatrical Venue under 500 Seats) in Farmers Branch, TX, unveils their big summer musical of Pippin, by Steven Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson. Runway Theatre Troupe Campaigns to Help Broadway's SPRING AWAKENING Perform at 2016 Tony Awards

Runway Theatre's production of Spring Awakening will continue to sing the song of purple summer as they begin to collect donations to aid in the effort to send the cast of Deaf West's Spring Awakening to the Tony Awards. Beginning with this Friday's performance, Runway Theatre patrons will be able to donate money that will go towards allowing the Deaf West cast to perform on the 2016 Tony Awards.

BWW Review: SPRING AWAKENING at Runway Theatre

In 2007, Dunken Sheik and Steven Sater's rock musical SPRING AWAKENING took home eight of the eleven Tony Awards it was nominated for, including the coveted Best Musical award. It was bold, new, edgy - and it caught the hearts and minds of everyone who saw it. Although the current local production at Runway Theatre is unlikely to be held to the same standards, the audience reaction to the company's opening night performance was every bit as excited about the show as the audiences in New York.

BWW Interview: Janelle Lutz of THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE at The Firehouse Theatre

This week, I sat down with Janelle Lutz backstage at The Firehouse Theatre, moments before she took the stage for her second (and final) dress rehearsal for THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, which runs February 18th through March 6th. Lutz (pronounced 'loots,' although she doesn't correct those that rhyme her name with klutz) shared her affection for Julie Andrews' portrayal of the role in the 1967 movie, and admitted some intimidation in following in Sutton Foster's Broadway shoes. As we talked about her exciting stage opportunities around DFW, I couldn't help but observe how one of DFW's largest stage personalities is also one of the most sincere, humble performers I've had the chance to speak with. Upon the end of our conversation, when I gave Ms. Lutz the opportunity to add anything I may have overlooked, she thought for a moment and responded: 'I'd just like to say thank you to the Dallas theatre community. This is my family; they've taken huge chances on me.'
