After a brilliant debut with NAC Orchestra last season, Juraj Valcuha returns….Béla Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto reflects the composer’s Hungarian heritage, including a set of brilliant variations on a peasant tune; the opportunities abound for virtuosic display and audience dazzling by soloist Valeriy Sokolov, whose playing is “full of effective contrasts, steel alternating with velvet.” (The Strad). Sometimes dubbed “Apotheosis of the Dance,” Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony fairly dances with rhythmic drive and energy. And certain to delight are the colourful gypsy sounds of Kodály’s Dances of Galánta.
