BWW Review: WEST SIDE STORY Comes Alive in Immersive Production at Theater West End in Sanford, FL

At Theater West End, you've entered the world of WEST SIDE STORY before even taking your seat. Getting there requires walking across the blue-collar, gang-ridden streets of 1950s New York in the Upper West Side. There's graffiti on the floor beneath you and the walls all around. T-shirts hang out to dry on clotheslines over your head. There's a basketball goal on the cage-wire fence the band sits behind. You might even be seated next to a fire hydrant or a traffic cone. It takes a moment to remember that this same space was home to Madison County's bridges just a couple months ago...

Blockbuster Disney's Aladdin and record-breaking new musical comedy Mean Girls will make their Orlando premieres as part of the 2019-2020 FAIRWINDS Broadway in Orlando series at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. The season also includes audience favorites Escape to Margaritaville: The Jimmy Buffett Musical, A Bronx Tale and The Play That Goes Wrong, along with Tony Award-nominated revivals Miss Saigon and Lerner and Loewe's My Fair Lady. The season will also feature the return of the musical phenomenon Les Miserables, for one week only.

The Valentine's edition of It's Improvised at the 129! focuses on the theme of love as the Central Florida theater community explores the rewards and challenges of couples that are both performers. This month's special guests include couples Jamie and Daryl Black, Gina and John Hunter, Jodi Chase and John Pelky, Tiffany Anthony & Lucindo Teixeira, as well as Alexandra Love Sarton, owner of the COAL Space. Each of the couples have improvised and/or acted individually and together at such venues as SAK Comedy Lab, Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and at independent performance spaces throughout Central Florida. Alex Love Sarton also performs as an improviser and singer and leads meditation and enlightenment sessions focused on the beauty and love of life.

A collection of artwork by acclaimed artist, Joyce Hayes, will be featured in the Maxwell C. King Center's Harris Corporation Art Gallery from February 4 - March 3 as she presents "Eye Of The Soul." Ticketed guests attending King Center main stage performances will be able to view the exhibit. A "Meet the Artist" reception will be held on Tuesday, February 12 from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. that is open to the public.  Guests may interact and chat with Ms. Hayes about her work. She will also be present at most of the main stage shows and available to speak with guests about her artwork.

Valencia College To Host Reading Of Ancient Greek Drama About Refugee Crisis

On Feb. 21, Valencia College's West Campus will host a dramatic reading of "The Suppliants" by Aeschylus, an ancient Greek drama centered around a chorus of 50 female refugees seeking asylum in the city of Argos. As internal struggle rocks Argos and its citizens debate whether to receive the refugees, the group of women await the decision of their collective fate. The reading will be followed by a discussion on themes addressed in the text.
