The Green Room 42 presents Shaq Hester in MIRROR WORK on Sunday, August 30, 2026 at 7 PM. After playing the role of Pharus Jonathan Young in The Ensemble Theatre’s Choir Boy, headlining his Broadway World-nominated concert at Joe’s Pub, and appearing on NPR’s Tiny Desk with Durand Jones, Jersey-born, Southern-bred singer-actor, Shaq Hester finally answers the call to bring Mirror Work to life!

Mirror Work is an interactive communal experience where speaking in the mirror to our younger and elder self is required. Joining this will feel like an intersection of a kiki, an affirmation party, and a soul-affirming church! We all know that when Murphy’s law is murphying and life is life-ing, choosing joy, gratitude and self-love is a daily choice - a hard one that you have to coach yourself through! For Shaq, he stands in front of a mirror and says, “I love you… Everything is working out for me… I am exactly who I think I am… God is here!” Has he always believed it?! No. Did it stop him from quitting when the phone didn’t ring and his heart broke? Yes. The work of self-talking, singing for healing (not only for occupation), and being whimsical have kept Shaq going and he wants to pass those tools to you! ABOUT SHAQ HESTER

Shaq Hester is a Jersey-Born, Carolina-Bred, and Brooklyn-based singer/actor with a sound rooted in soul, funk and jazz. He was nominated by BroadwayWorld for ‘Best Cabaret’ for his concert, You’ve Got a Friend: A Tribute to Donny & Roberta (Joe’s Pub). He has performed at the Apollo, Kings Theatre, Carnegie Hall, Minton’s Harlem, Rockwood Music Hall, 54 Below, The Cutting Room, Villa Lewaro and various national and international stages. His debut single, “Soft,” is available on all streaming platforms.

Most recently, he portrayed his dream role of Pharus Jonathan Young in Choir Boy (The Ensemble Theatre - Houston, TX), His favorite roles include Harpo in The Color Purple (Short North Stage, dir. Vasthy Mompoint), Wes in The View UpStairs (The Progressive Theater) and Little Moe in Five Guys Named Moe (Workshop Theatre of SC). Off-Broadway: Lewberger & the Wizard of Friendship Theatre Row, dir. Keith Habersberger), Antigone in Ferguson (Theater of War). Regional: Tituss Burgess’ The Preacher’s Wife (Alliance Theatre, dir. Michael Arden), Purlie (American Theater Group, dir. Kenny Ingram). He has toured with Bill T.
