Affirmation Theatre Companys co-founder and Artistic Director, Epiphany Samuels, has recently announced which three plays will be featured in the companys 2nd annual Black History Month Celebration. Through uplifting the voices of a team of phenomenal black playwrights and directors (whos bios can be found at the end of the article), this festival brings holistic, dynamic, and colorful black protagonists to the stage, deepening Affirmations long-term efforts to create spaces for artists from an expansive variety of experiences to come together and celebrate the beauty of true diversity in the world of theater. In Resting Real, written and directed by Josca Moore, a tight-knit mother-son bond begins to unravel on the eve of Joey's sixteenth birthday, when the truth about his father's wrongful death comes to light. Virgin Child: Requiem Mass of the Maternal Rite, written and directed by Marcus Dargan, observes the disproportionately high African American maternal and infant death rates. This tender and insightful piece offers a ritual in response to the matchless pain of the souls of both mother and child. The Eight, written by Rahima Rice and directed by Nile Harris and Jordan Powell, explores the sacrifices we make for love and lust and the pain and shame around secrets, all while tracking the losses of communities experiencing gentrification. Set in Anacostia, one of Washington DC's most historic neighborhoods, this unique story uses blunt and shameless humor to challenge its viewers perspectives on socio political connotations, race, sexuality. All three plays will run on both Friday, February 21st and Saturday, February 22nd, 2020 at 8:00 pm (doors open at 7:30pm). 10-dollar early-bird tickets are available to all on Eventbritenow through February 18th. Tickets sold after February 18th are $20, but tickets sold at the door to students and self-identifying black folx will remain $10. There will be small breaks between each one act to set up so late seating will be available throughout the night.Meet the Playwrights:Marcus Dargan (Director/Playwright) is the former Artistic Director and founder of NuAFrikan Theatre.
