Poster House, the first museum in the United States dedicated to the global history of posters, will host its monthly “First Friday” event April 7, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM at Poster House, 119 West 23rd Street in Manhattan. On the first Friday of every month, Poster House offers free admission and extended hours for guests to come explore the museum’s latest exhibitions. The two main exhibitions currently on display for the spring season are Black Power to Black People: Branding the Black Panther Party and Made in Japan: 20th-Century Poster Art. Both exhibits will be open through September 10, 2023.

Every First Friday is different, offering unique opportunities such as tours, workshops, performances, and activities, to further engage visitors with the exhibitions. First Friday Activities for April 7th include:

· 12:00 PM : Upstander intervention training with the New York City Anti-Violence Project. Participants will learn de-escalation strategies and how to safely intervene when witnessing or experiencing violence.

· 3:00 PM : Black Power to Black People: Branding the Black Panther Party curator Es-pranza Humphrey will take visitors through the exhibition and dive deeper into how the Black Panther Party devised a graphic language to reaffirm Black humanity and decommodify Black life.

· 3:30 PM : Teens are invited to a vine making workshop with the Young Lordes Collective, who will help facilitate a discussion about the use and importance of posters/pamphlets/other printable media in activism.

· 5:30 PM : Teens are invited to a workshop where participants will create haikus using watercolor and calligraphy, inspired by Sat Kochi’s Five Seasons (1988) which can be found in the Made in Japan: 20th-Century Poster Art exhibition.

Free tickets can be reserved online in advance of April 7th. During normal hours, tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students, veterans, and seniors. Poster House offers free museum admission through the New York City’s public library Culture Pass system.
