Internet Sensation, dancing philosopher, and comedian Toni Nagy is coming to the SoHo Playhouse along with performance artist Seraphina Supernova to debut their show, “Grape Culture” a tragic-comedy stripping back the cultural bondage of domination without consent on April 10th-12th. The doors open at 6:30 and the show is at 7pm.
“Grape Culture,” which received rave reviews at both the Hollywood and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, embodies the thrusting energy of comedy while also being penetrated by dance, film, storytelling, clowning, stand up, and skits. Toni and Seraphina will pervert the pretty by unmasking the ugly truth that “grape” culture isn’t a part of our culture, it is our culture.
The show will undress the consciousness of “grape culture” while stripping back the predatory and pervasive programming that is choking us all. “Grape” isn’t just about a single violent act in an alleyway, but a psychological imprint that dictates not only how we treat each other, but also the planet. “Grape” culture is embedded in capitalism and serves as the fabric which weaves exploitative industries together. When we think of “grape” as just a “woman’s problem,” we ignore that “Grape” culture is at the root of systemic oppression, and we need to dig it out collectively so that we can plant new seeds of sovereignty and autonomy.
Toni and Seraphina start the show with a big picture look at how “grape culture” has framed society and then pull down the pants of their “grapists” in a micro analysis of how they were individually impacted. The sharing of stories mixed with documentary footage, skits, and comedy offers an unashamed, raw, conversation that invites the audience in. The show isn’t about re-traumatizing or shaming anyone, but rather to ignite a dialogue to better understand ourselves.
Toni and Seraphina work through their personal moments of how their innocence became annihilated, and together they alchemize their stories through the magic of artistic play. They use the language of comedy to make an indigestible subject more palatable. Laughter is our therapy and Toni and Seraphina are convinced that healing can occur when we are willing to dive into messy waters so we can then swim to an oasis of a new paradigm.
SoHo Playhouse is at 15 Vandam St, New York, NY 10013, New York, NY.
