Hook & Eye Theater to Present World Premiere of THE SUMMONERS, 1/21-2/1

Hook & Eye Theater announced that it will present The Summoners by Gavin Broady at the Celebration of Whimsy January 21 through February 1, 2014. Directed by Chad Lindsey, The Summoners was devised by the company through a series of workshops in the Poconos last year.

Internationally renowned singer/dancer/percussionist Alessandra Belloni and I Giullari di Piazza present 'Drums of Illumination,' a program of ritual drumming, trance dances, and chants representing four great cultural traditions: Southern Italian, Native American, Middle Eastern, and African Music. Belloni and I Giullari will be joined by the SilverCloud Native American Singers and Dancers, completing a remarkable group of percussionists, vocalists and dancers, all specializing in healing and ritual music and dance. Sunday, January 5th at 6 PM at Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue.

Eat a Radish Productions has announced that two of downtown's most audacious playwrights and performers will unite for the off-off Broadway run of DARKLING and HIP, two dark comedies that explore the inside world of the outsider. DARKLING, written and performed by Kim Katzberg, is a far-out, bitingly funny journey through teen angst that will play alongside Nora Woolley's HIP, a heart-wrenching comedy about longing for fame while steeped in the discomfort of self-consciousness. Previews begin today, December 21st at IRT Theater, 154 Christopher St. DARKLING & HIP officially opens on Saturday, January 4th at 7PM. Raquel Cion directs.

'East Towards Home' by Billy Yalowitz brings to life three generations of Jewish left-wing culture in New York City, combining tales of radical choreographers of the 1930's and 40's, texts and songs from Woody Guthrie, and first-person stories of the author's NYC Jewish left-wing childhood in the 1960's and 70's. With loose-limbed storytelling, visual projections, animation, modern dance and live music, it offers a personal and impassioned look at the culture and history of the American Jewish radical left-wing community at a time when this legacy is in danger of passing into obscurity. Theater for the New City will present the play's world premiere run January 16 to February 2, directed by David Schechter.

The Play Company (PlayCo) presents the U.S. premiere of I Call My Brothers, a bold new work about race, suspicion and identity by celebrated young Swedish writer Jonas Hassen Khemiri. Running January 22­-February 23 at the New Ohio Theatre (154 Christopher Street), the production continues PlayCo's relationship with both Khemiri and director Erica Schmidt, whose multiple collaborations with the company include the Obie-winning 2011 premiere of Khemiri's Invasion! With I Call My Brothers, Khemiri moves to even more powerful and personal terrain, spinning a bold story out of a tragic event and asking: "What happens when we start to see ourselves as others see us?"

ACTORS AND DIRECTORS LIVING IN BROOKLYN (AdLib), in association with THE SIMON STUDIO, is pleased to announce the world premiere production of Sarah Levine Simon's THE PORTRAIT, directed by Roger Hendricks Simon (NY Shakespeare Festival, Yale Rep, London's Royal Court Theatre). THE PORTRAIT, which was first written and produced as a radio play for National Public Radio, will play a limited engagement at Theatre 54 (Shetler Studios, 244 West 54th Street, 12th Fl.). Performances begin Wednesday, January 15 and continue through Sunday, January 26. Opening Night is Thursday, January 16 (8 p.m.). Tickets are $18 and are available at smarttix.com.

La MaMa kicks off 2014 with two offerings by Split Britches, New York's premiere lesbian performance troupe: 'Ruff,' Peggy Shaw's performance about life and art following her 2011 stroke, and 'Desperate Archives,' a gallery show of installations made from remnants of the company's last 20 years of work. 'Ruff' is performed by Peggy Shaw; it is written by Shaw and Lois Weaver and directed by Weaver. 'Desperate Archives' features contributions by Vivian Stoll, Stormy Brandenberger, Susan Young, Lori E Seid, Matt Delbridge, Helaine Gawlica, Eva Weiss, Saskia Scheffer, Jo Palmer and the Man Meat Collective.

HANAFUDI DENKI - THE DANCE OF DEATH is high-voltage Japanese underground musical based on Threepenny Opera, set in a funeral parlor in Tokyo during World War I. In it, a dead girl who loves a living boy adventures between two worlds - the dead and the living. The play's creator, Shuji Terayama once said, "Humans are incomplete cadavers", and this work is heavily tinged with this sentiment. It's a thought-provoking meditation on how we view death and life.
