BWW Review: Lyric Arts Empowers Romance in Endearing GUYS AND DOLLS
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - July 23, 2018
Guys and Dolls, a charming musical opening a half century ago on Broadway in 1951, reminisces New York's hidden society-gamblers, exotic dancers and 'sinners'-along with the missionaries who tried to redeem them. A story based on a series of short stories by Damon Runyon, Jo Sweeney and Abe Burrows created the book together with Frank Loesser's mesmerizing melodies and lyrics that brings the tale of two determined young women, Adelaide and Sarah, to life. The musical was eventually denied a Pulitzer Prize because one of the producers was blacklisted, and this retells another fascinating story in itself.
BWW Review: Gremlin Theatre's Regional Premiere of IDEATION is a Taut, Thrilling, Engrossing, and Funny 90 Minutes
by Jill Schafer - July 21, 2018
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you. The characters in the play IDEATION are definitely paranoid, entertainingly so, but whether or not someone is out to get them is still a question mark at the end of the play. The regional premiere of IDEATION by Gremlin Theatre is a taut, thrilling, engrossing, and funny 90 minutes of work colleagues going down a paranoid rabbit hole, and it'll make your head spin, in the best way. Rarely has my logical math left brain side been so engaged and excited at the theater as I tried to follow these characters through their hypotheses and arguments and conclusions. Theories and algebraic equations are written on the white board, only to be erased and written over by a new theory. By the end you don't know what to believe, and neither do the characters in the play, but it sure is fun to watch their wheels spin.
BWW Review: AUDRA McDONALD with the Minnesota Orchestra
by Kristen Hirsch Montag - July 14, 2018
Audra McDonald is a busy, working mother of four who also happens to have six Tonys among her many awards and still finds time to support social causes that mean a lot to her, as well as bringing her activism into her set list in ways both overt and subtle. She played a one-night concert with the Minnesota Orchestra on July 13, 2018. But if you missed it, read on for how you can experience it, too.
BWW Review: Flying Foot Forum's FRENCH TWIST Frolics at Park Square Theatre
by Karen Bovard - July 13, 2018
Flying Foot Forum is one of the Twin Cities' most original performing companies. What they do-full evenings of original percussive dance, often with a historical or cultural jumping off point, and always with a big dose of humor-is unique. FRENCH TWIST (or parts of it) has been in their repertoire since 2008. A revival with new bits plays just through July 15 at Park Square Theatre's basement space in Saint Paul, as the company celebrates its 25th experimental season.

BWW Review: Park Square Theatre Reinvents a Classic Tale in the Endlessly Delightful BASKERVILLE: A SHERLOCK HOLMES MYSTERY
by Jill Schafer - July 06, 2018
Staging a mystery play during the summer is a longstanding tradition at Park Square Theatre, and I've come to look forward to it every year. It's always fun to immerse yourself in the light yet brain-teasing summer blockbuster fare. But their production of KEN LUDWIG'S BASKERVILLE: A SHERLOCK HOLMES MYSTERY is anything but traditional. This new play tells one of the most well known Sherlock stories in a fresh, fun, and imaginative way, with just five actors and a whirlwind, almost slapstick style. Director Theo Langason brings all the innovation and physical storytelling experience from Sandbox Theatre, of which he is an ensemble member, to bear on this wonderfully playful and endlessly delightful production. And the fantastic five-person cast is so playful and fun to watch, including a female Holmes and Watson, because why not?! At a time when so many of us need it, BASKERVILLE provides pure escapist summer fun.

BWW Review: LOVE NEVER DIES sequel fails to bring back that loving feeling
by Kristen Hirsch Montag - July 01, 2018
If you're surprised the Phantom is still playing Broadway and touring, you'll be more surprised that there's a sequel. This tale fails to resurrect that love that carries the original with a hard-to-believe story and much less spark.
BWW Review: Enjoy the Comedy&Tragedy of ROMEO&JULIET whilst Sitting Outside on a Minnesota Midsummer Night in Classical Actors Ensemble's Free Shakespeare in the Park
by Jill Schafer - June 30, 2018
The best thing about summer in Minnesota is outdoor theater. And the lakes, of course. But I love nothing more on a lovely summer evening than to sit outside in a park or a garden somewhere while someone tells me a story. Classical Actors Ensemble continues their tradition of bringing Shakespeare to metro area parks (for free!) with ROMEO AND JULIET, playing at Lake of the Isles and many other parks through mid July. Previously I've seen CAE do Shakespeare's comedies, and found them to be so fun, playful, and almost interactive, the way Shakespeare was meant to be. This is the first time I've seen them do a tragedy for their fun summer outdoor play. But Romeo and Juliet is pretty much a rom-com, until somebody dies, so it's still fun and playful in the beginning. And while maybe the tragedy doesn't have quite the same effect when the sun is softly setting, the birds are chirping, and the wind is blowing through the leaves on the trees, it's still the best way to see Shakespeare.

BWW Review: After Sixty Years, Guthrie's WEST SIDE STORY Still Sparks Cultural Controversy
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - June 29, 2018
On stage the past weekend, Minneapolis's Guthrie Theater opened a production of of the iconic musical West Side Story in the Wurtlele Thrust Stage. The following Tuesday, June 26, the United States Supreme Court upheld the country's travel ban for seven countries, mainly located in the Middle East, on strict rules governing their admittance to the U.S. On Thursday, another shooting happened near Annapolis, Maryland, killing five people when a gunman opened fire through a glass door at a small newspaper office. In a powerful scene during this opening of West Side Story, the character of Doc addresses one of the two rival gangs named the Jets when they host a war council in his drug store: “Why do you live like there's a war on? Why do you kill?'
