MBAA Present an ANTI-BULLYING Message in Hit Summer Musical HONK!

The Memphis Black Arts Alliance is Back At It with yet another Great Summer Musical! HONK! The Musical, written by Anthony Drewe and George Stiles, serves as the perfect and empowering ending of SPARK, the MBAA Summer Performing Arts Readiness Kamp for children ages 6-18! HONK!, the Musical, presented Friday, July 27 through Sunday 29 at the beautiful Buckman Performing Arts Center, is a musical adaptation of “The Ugly Duckling” originally penned by Hans Christian Anderson. Since the Award Winning Musical first hatched in 1993, Stiles & Drewe’s musical HONK! has winged its way around the world in over 8000 productions and in many different languages and won multiple awards, including the 2000 Olivier Award for Best Musical. Ugly the Duckling looks quite different from his darling brothers and sisters, and all of the other animals on the pond are quick to notice and hasten to, and sometimes quite nastily, point this out, despite his mother’s protective flapping. Feeling rather foul about himself, Ugly finds himself depressed and wonders off alone but finds himself on an adventure of self-discovery, meeting a flock of unique characters, making friends, outwitting a very hungry Cat and Finding His Unique Purpose in life.
HONK! The Musical will flood the audience with incredible talent! Our gifted SPARK Summer Campers will share the stage with International Stage and Recording Artist, John David Macon, who most recently returned “home” after touring abroad, stars in the role of DRAKE, the Father Duck. Former Miss Black MSU, and award winning Jazz Vocalist, Sandra Bray stars as IDA, the Determined and Loving Mother Duck. Agile dancer, choreographer and fashion model Dennis Groves, takes the stage as the Antagonistic CAT, and last but certainly not least, DOSF Award Winner and President of the LeMoyne Owen College Singers, Thedrick Griffin Brilliantly takes on the Starring Role of “UGLY THE DUCKLING”! It is directed and choreographed by Lar’Juanette Williams, Musical Direction by the Amazing Valetta Brinson and the Masterful Dr. Alvin McKinney! Additional Choreography by Dennis Groves, KaTeria Scullark, and Marquita Brooks. Lights by Broadway World Winner, Willis Eleby. Costumes by ReKeitha Morris, Set Design by John Fionte and the list goes on and on!
“Last year when attempting to make the “call” on our 2018 SPARK Summer Show, we took under consideration that we have a very unique camp. We train the gifted children all summer how to work alongside professional performers. Finding a show that is both entertaining and provides a platform that hones skills is not that easy, however HONK! The Musical encompasses all that we need and more. Further, after recognizing the many children and adults that are suffering with depression due to bullying and acceptance, to the degree of taking their own lives, we realized that HONK! The Musical is a “divine” undertaking and it is our hope that all that come to see it will walk away ready to Embrace Their Differences and Dive Into Purpose,” says Lar’Juanette Williams, Executive Director of MBAA.
HONK! The Musical will open Friday, July 27th at 7:30pm at the Buckman Performing Arts Center, located at 60 Perkins Extended. Additional showings will be Saturday, July 28th at 2pm and 7:30pm, and closing performance Sunday July 29th at 2pm. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. For Tickets visit or in person at the FireHouse Community Arts Center, located at 985 S. Bellevue Blvd. For additional information call 901-948-9522.
Prepare for Take Off, Embrace Your Difference, Conquer Your Bullies and Dive Into Purpose with HONK! The Musical, running July 27 – 29 at Buckman Performing Arts Center, 60 Perkins Extended. Don’t Miss It!
