“Hilarious!” - The Examiner
Jackie Mason lives again in this riotously funny comedy based on a true story. The show features Jackie's real life daughter comedian Sheba Mason, his striking look-alike Ian Wehrle, Don Rickel's daughter Mindy Rickles and Canadian Singing sensation from The Raes TV show, Cherrill Rae. The “Soaring musical score" (Around-Town News) features original songs: “Ode to the Early Bird Special,” “The Finger”,” and “I Never Met This Yenta.”
“A moving, laugh-filled evening!" - Broadway World
The story takes place in Miami Beach 1977-1988 encapsulating the nostalgic charm of that era, as Jackie's romantic misadventures clash with his ascension to Broadway stardom, and Sheba is born.
“A magnificent, undiscovered gem!” - Applause! Applause
The Jackie Mason Musical has played up and down the East Coast, from St. Luke’s Theatre Off-Broadway to the New York Comedy Festival at The Triad Theater, but this will be the premiere West Coast production, one week only, Thursday, May 7 through Sunday, May 10 only; rated; 16+
According to Ian Wehrle, “the goal is to keep alive in the 21st century the traditions of Jewish humor, musical theatre, and standup comedy that helped define the intellectual, moral and cultural climate – the zeitgeist – of the 2th century. Ginger and Sheba are direct touch points to the genealogy of comedic greatness. And they have provided an excellent access point to the joy that Jackie brought to the world in his time.”
The Santa Monica Playhouse Jewish Heritage Project supports productions and experiences that keep the unique richness of Jewish theatre alive, honor the historical and cultural importance of Jewish heritage, and insure that new generations of theatre-goers appreciate and celebrate the life experience of Jewish ancestry, literature and tradition.
