Azusa Pacific University launches the 2026-27 Season with the 50th Anniversary of the Stephen Schwartz musical GODSPELL

Azusa Pacific University’s Theater Arts Department opens the 2026-27 season with the timeless American music classic, Godspell. Originally conceived by John-Michael Tebelak, with music and lyrics by three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), Godspell has become one of the most enduring and uplifting musicals in American theater. 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the original Broadway production, making this a wonderful opportunity to experience this timeless story of faith, love, and community.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of Coachella, our production of Godspell follows the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ through the stories, parables, and teachings found in the Gospel of Matthew. Through music, movement, humor, and heartfelt storytelling, audiences are invited to experience Christ’s call to love, serve, forgive, and live in faith as His journey leads toward the Cross and the hope of redemption. Our production is co-directed by guest artists Brian and Leah Purcell, who bring their unique creative perspective to this joyful and inspiring musical.

As part of APU’s nationally recognized BFA in Acting for the Stage and Screen, this production highlights the department's commitment to rigorous, professional-level training. Following this production, the APU season will continue with A Christmas Carol: A Radio Play, Dancing at Lughnasa, Rosencrantz & Gildenstern are Dead and Sondheim on Sondheim.

The Theater Arts Department at Azusa Pacific University is dedicated to producing exceptional theatrical experiences through rigorous training and innovative programming. The department is nationally recognized for its BFA in Acting for The Stage and Screen program.

Godspell continues to inspire five decades later and features the timeless hit “Day by Day”. Godspell will be presented on the West Campus of Azusa Pacific University in the Warehouse Theater, October 9-24. To purchase season or single tickets, visit apu.edu/theater or call 626/815-5494.
