The 43rd William Inge Theatre Festival takes place April 23-25 at Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas, honoring playwright Qui Nguyen, who joins a distinguished roster of past honorees including Arthur Miller, Stephen Sondheim, Lauren Gunderson, and Lynn Nottage. The festival includes three days of performances, workshops, panel discussions, and the New Play Lab, which features rehearsed readings of scripts by 13 playwrights from across the country, with responses from dramaturgs and directors including Carla Steen of the Guthrie Theatre, Ernie Nolan of the Unicorn Theatre, and Robert Ross Parker. A production of Nguyen's play Living Dead in Denmark will be performed during the festival, followed by a public conversation with Nguyen moderated by Parker, and an award presentation. The festival celebrates the legacy of Independence native William Inge, whose work earned both a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and an Academy Award for Best Screenplay.
