KC Rep's 50th Anniversary Season to Open with David Cromer's OUR TOWN, 9/5

Kansas City Repertory Theatre will open its 50th anniversary celebration with the Kansas City premiere of David Cromer's Our Town, an enduring American story which examines the everyday lives of an average town's citizens in the early twentieth century. Our Town, one of the greatest American plays written by Thornton Wilder, the three-time Pulitzer prize-winning playwright and novelist will be directed by David Cromer, MacArthur Foundation 'genius' grant recipient and director of KC Rep's 2009 production of The Glass Menagerie which received national and local critical acclaim. This co-production with UMKC Theatre will feature redesigned seating at Spencer Theatre in the James C. Olson performing Arts Center on the UMKC campus. The show will run September 5 through 28th. One enchanted evening is what Kansas City audiences received on opening night of South Pacific, the Musical Theater Heritage production at the Off Center Theatre. Premiering on Broadway in 1949 the musical composed by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II garnered 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical, and Best Score. It is the only musical production to win all four Tony Awards in the acting Categories and in 1950, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The Barn Players have been notified that their production of "August: Osage County", May 30th through June 15th this season, has been nominated for the prestigious OUTSTANDING PLAY AWARD OF THE YEAR AWARD by IMEA, the International Music and Entertainment Association. Notification was received today from Colt Chambers, President of IMEA.

Sarah Crawford directs the Musical Theatre Heritage production and provides musical direction with Jeremy Watson.

Artistic directors for theaters in Kansas City should take a hard look at A Hard Day's Night currently playing at the Just Off Broadway Theatre in Kansas City. Lot in Life Productions and Vicki Vodrey, the writer and producer for A Hard Day's Night, have produced an intricate, enormously funny 90-minute dark comedy that easily should fill any theater in Kansas City. Songs from the Beatles are sewn into the script with perfect precision and timing. The world premiere is performed in conjunction with the KC Fringe Festival.

The very humorous melodrama written and directed by Madeline McCrae is one of many productions showing at the old American Heartland Theatre in conjunction with the KC Fringe Festival. In addition to theater, McCrae is an accomplished photographer and has her works on display at the KC Fringe Festival's Visual Art Show located in Union Station.

Kansas City Repertory Theatre Executive Director Angela Gieras today announced the launch of the Our Town Heroes campaign in honor of the KC Rep's 50th Anniversary to identify and celebrate local heroes from the community. Our Town heroes can be from the greater Kansas City metropolitan area whose actions impact, inspire and influence our community. Nominations can be submitted online here and winners will be announced throughout the 2014-2015 season opening production, Our Town, running September 5 through the 28th. The deadline for submission is August 15, 2014.
