Barn Players to Present LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, 11/7-23

Next at The Barn Players is "La Cage Aux Folles" - the hilarious play is the winner of six Tony Awards and was made into the popular movie "The Birdcage". The show will play November 7th through November 23rd with performances Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 and Sunday matinees at 2:00 at the Barn Players and is the theatre group's final 2014 regular season production.

Mamma Mia! what a way to open a season. Mamma Mia! the feel-good musical that has over 5,000 performances on Broadway opened Tuesday October 7 at the Music Hall in Kansas City, MO. Phyllida Lloyd directs the Broadway Across America special engagement that runs through Sunday October 12. Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus wrote the music and lyrics with choreography by Anthony Van Laast.

The heart gripping, emotional roller coaster, The Normal Heart opened at the Off Center Theatre in Crown Center on October 3. Larry Kramer wrote the largely autobiographical play that opened in 1985 Off-Broadway and on Broadway in April of 2011. The Normal Heart considered one of the best plays to deal with the epidemic was also one of the first productions to bring it to the stage.

Karen Paisley directs the amazing production that marks the 10th season of the theatrical company and their 50th production. One member of the audience told me she had seen Lost in Yonkers in New York and preferred the Met production, with the smaller more intimate stage.

The musical with book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado, and music by Galt MacDermot opened Friday September 19 and runs through October 5. The original rock musical opened Off-Broadway in 1967 at the Joseph Papp's Public Theater and in 1968 opened on Broadway running for 1,750 performances.

Kansas City Repertory Theatre continues its 50th anniversary celebration with the Kansas City premiere of Ayad Akhtar's The Who & The What, directed by Kansas City Repertory Theatre's Artistic Director Eric Rosen. From the 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning writer of Disgraced, Ayad Akhtar's play, The Who & The What takes a passionate and searing look at a family divided by faith, bonded by love and searching for truth in contemporary America. A brilliant young Pakistani writer is focused on finishing a controversial novel that bridges the gulf between her modern life and her traditional heritage. But when her conservative father and sister discover her manuscript, they are all forced to confront the beliefs that define then. William Inge Center for the Arts Welcomes Karen Carpenter as New Interim Artistic Director

Karen Carpenter, a producer, director and teacher, a theater-maker for more than 30 years, has been appointed the interim Artistic Director of the William Inge Center for the Arts and the 34th Annual William Inge Theatre Festival. The Inge Festival is the Official Theater Festival of the State of Kansas, hosted on the campus of Independence Community College, which houses the William Inge archives.
