Position Overview: Teaching Artist

Reports to: Director of Education and Outreach

We are seeking two enthusiastic Teaching Artists to join our team and deliver dynamic, inclusive theatre programs for all ages and experience levels. Reporting to the Director of Education and Outreach, this role combines artistry and education to inspire the next generation of performers in a collaborative and supportive environment. Responsibilities

Teaching: Facilitate dynamic, engaging classes across a wide demographic spectrum, including Drama Sprouts (ages 3–4), Little Thespians (ages 5–7), Rising Stars (ages 8–12), teens, adults, seniors, and learners with adaptive needs. Classes, ranging from 8 to 16 weeks, end with a Share Day or performance and typically last 1 to 1.5 hours.

Curriculum Development: Design inclusive lesson plans that inspire creativity, develop social-emotional skills, and prepare participants with valuable 21st-century competencies through the performing arts.



Collaboration: Work closely with fellow teaching artists and staff to create programming that accommodates diverse skill levels and interests, ensuring accessible and meaningful experiences for all participants.

Documentation and Evaluation: Maintain accurate attendance records, communicate with families, provide constructive feedback, evaluations, and assessments, and use data to enhance and improve programs.

Professional Development: Participate in ongoing training to enhance instructional techniques and deepen expertise in theatre arts.



Literature Alive Program: Deliver engaging and interactive pre-show workshops before students travel to experience our Theatre for Youth performances, visiting schools and communities across Connecticut.

Administrative Contribution: Support operational logistics, including scheduling spaces, maintaining parent/caregiver communication, assisting at events, and providing substitute teaching or class oversight as needed.



Special Events and Innovative Programming:

Enhance community engagement through innovative programming, including specialty workshops, "Playcation Days," and off-site classes in partnership with local organizations, libraries, youth and family services, and scouting groups.



Outreach and Partnerships:

Support the organization’s mission and increase enrollment by attending events, forming partnerships, and encouraging greater community involvement.

Adaptability and Growth: Support the academy’s evolving needs, participating as a collaborative and versatile team member to drive innovation and organizational success.

Ideal Candidates Will:

Be highly motivated, energetic, and organized, with a genuine passion for theatre and teaching.

Possess a robust background in acting, musical theatre, or any related discipline.

Demonstrate excellent communication skills to create a fun, safe, and inclusive learning environment for all students.

Exhibit patience and compassion, along with a strong enthusiasm for student development and success.

Essential Qualifications

Proficiency in one or more of the following: Acting, Musical Theatre, Creative Drama/Story Drama, Directing, Improv, and/or Music Direction.

3–5 years of teaching experience and strong classroom management skills.

Ability to engage with diverse age groups and learning styles.

Cultural competency and a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusive education practices.

Reliable transportation and flexibility for evening and weekend engagements.

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in Theatre, Education, Educational Theatre, Applied Theatre, or related field (or equivalent experience).

Experience working with adaptive learners, individuals with special needs, and diverse populations.

Spanish proficiency and CPR/First Aid certification are pluses.

Salary and Schedule

This part-time, 20-hour-per-week position includes evening and weekend commitments. Competitive salary is based on experience, with ample opportunities for growth and professional development.

You will be contacted via email if we decide to move forward with your application to schedule an interview and a 10-minute demonstration of your specialty. During this demonstration, a small panel of interviewers will observe your lesson. If you are selected as a finalist following the interview, a background check will be required.
