Industry Pro Newsletter: Broadway's Star-Studded Spring + A Historic Pittsburgh Merger
Serino Coyne goes independent, UK designers push for Olivier recognition, and what Ireland's artist income experiment means for the future of the arts.
On the business side, the independent acquisition of Serino Coyne signals a shift away from the consolidation model that has defined much of the advertising world, while the merger of Pittsburgh Public Theater and Pittsburgh CLO illustrates how financial pressure is prompting institutions to find strength in unity. On the creative side, BroadwayWorld's Spring Preview paints an exciting picture of a season packed with star power and long-awaited arrivals. Internationally, UK theatremakers are pushing for greater recognition of emerging craft disciplines at the Oliviers, and a landmark Irish experiment offers compelling evidence that investing directly in artists yields measurable cultural and economic returns.

American Theatre: 2 Pittsburgh Theatres Formalize Merger
Pittsburgh Public Theater, founded in 1975, and Pittsburgh CLO, founded in 1946, have voted to merge into a new, unified organization, with both institutions ceasing to exist under their current names. The merger follows more than a year of research and discussion, and was prompted by financial challenges facing both organizations; talks initially included City Theatre, which elected in January to go its own way. The first full season under the new structure is slated to debut in January 2027, with programming details for the new organization expected by fall 2026. An interim board has been established to oversee the transition, and Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O'Connor commented that the merger is a bold step honoring the legacy of both institutions while building a stronger future for the city's cultural life and Downtown Cultural District.

UK Theatremakers Petition for New Video Design Category at the Olivier Awards
Over 100 UK theatre artists have signed a petition calling for a new Video Design category to be introduced at the Olivier Awards. Prominent signatories include Jack Thorne, Trevor Nunn, James Graham, Lynette Linton, and Michael Harrison, with the petition targeting the Olivier Awards 2027. The petition states that the creation of the new award category would not only acknowledge and celebrate the work of video designers, but would also draw attention to a medium often vital to productions that speak to the next generation of audiences. The Olivier Awards 2026, celebrating their 50th anniversary, will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on April 12, hosted by Nick Mohammed, and will be broadcast on BBC Two and iPlayer.
ArtsJournal: What Ireland's Basic Artist Income Experiment Tells Us About a New Arts Economy
Writing for ArtsJournal's diacritical blog, Douglas McLennan examines the results of Ireland's three-year Basic Income for the Arts pilot, in which the Irish government provided €325 per week to 2,000 randomly selected artists with no conditions attached — a program now made permanent. Key findings showed that for every euro invested, the Irish economy received €1.39 in return, with recipients spending 11 more hours per week on creative work than a control group; the dropout rate from the arts held steady at 4–5.5% for recipients, while the control group's rate doubled from 6% to 13.5% over two years.
