Winner of the 2018 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Revival, JESUS HOPPED THE ‘A’ TRAIN tells the story of Angel Cruz, a bike messenger from New York City who is awaiting trial in Rikers Island prison for shooting the leader of a religious cult in the “ass”. He is on his knees, alone and terrified, trying to say a prayer he no longer remembers to a God he has all but forgotten. Angel’s court appointed attorney, Mary Hanrahan, is lucky if she can keep her client’s names straight. His guards are indifferent. Worse, Angel is subject to repeated inmate brutality, landing him in protective custody, where he finds himself in the company of a charismatic serial killer named Lucius Jenkins, a born-again believer who will change the course of Angel’s life forever.
The strong ensemble cast features Los Angeles Guest Artist Mateo Mpinduzi-Mott as Angel Cruz, recently seen at CATASTROPHIC theatre in LEAP AND THE NET WILL APPEAR, Houston Press Best Actress Christy Watkins, Joe Palmore seen in 4th Wall’s 2017 Houston Press Award Winner for BEST PLAY – LOBBY HERO by Kenneth Lonergan, Santry Rush returns to 4th Wall where he was a Houston Press Best Actor nominee for his performance in 4th Wall’s (Stark Naked’s) THE GOOD THIEF by Conor McPherson, and making his 4th Wall Theatre Company debut we are joined by Orlando Arriaga recently seen at AD Players in LILLIES OF THE FIELD. The production will be Directed by 4th Wall Co-Founder, and Houston Press 2017 Best Director Winner for TRUE WEST by Sam Shepard and Co-Director for Houston Press Best Play Winner of 2017 LOBBY HERO by Kenneth Lonergan, Kim Tobin-Lehl, JESUS HOPPED THE ‘A’ TRAIN runs September 6th – September 29th, 2018, at STUDIO 101.
4th Wall could not be more excited to bring this multi-award winning, socially relevant play to Houston. Don’t miss 4th Wall Theatre’s production of JESUS HOPPED THE ‘A’ TRAIN, written by Pulitzer Prize winning and Tony nominated playwright, Stephen Adly Guirgis. Previewing on September 6th, JESUS HOPPED THE ‘A’ TRAIN opens on September 7th, and runs through Saturday, September 29th, 2018. Performances will be held at 4th Wall’s STUDIO 101, located at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, Texas, 77007. Regular show times are as follows: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm, Sundays at 3:00 pm, and a special “Pay What You Can” performance on Monday, September 24th at 7:30 pm. There will be audience and cast member talkbacks following the matinees on September 16th and 23rd. Individual tickets (priced at $32 for adults, $26 for seniors and $17 for students) and $53 Premier tickets are available for all performances.
