BREAKDOWN

Equity encourages everyone participating in the auditions to wear a two-ply cloth face mask, surgical
mask, singer’s mask or respirator (N95, KN95 or KF94). Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas

Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the

The 39 Steps

Richard Hannay: A dapper English gentleman, Richard Hannay is bored—until Annabella Schmidt
comes into his life and starts him on a heroic and hilarious journey. ROLE CAST.

Annabella Schmidt: An exotic secret agent, Annabella Schmidt is in dire need of Hannay’s help. ROLE
CAST.

Pamela: A beautiful women, Pamela is lured into Hannay’s adventure but is skeptical of his claims of
innocence.

Margaret: Crofter the farmer’s wife, Margaret is a shy young woman who dreams of life and adventure
in the city. ROLE CAST.

Crofter: A deeply jealous and suspicious Scottish farmer, Crofter houses Hannay for a night while he
is on the run. ROLE CAST.

Mr. Memory: A stage performer, Mr. Memory has the ability to recall thousands of facts on
command. ROLE CAST.

Professor Jordan: Surrounded in mystery, Professor Jordan may hold the key to learning what and
who “The 39 Steps” are. ROLE CAST.

The Sound of Music

Maria Rainer (musical theatre mix/soprano, dance, 20-35) A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey – young,
free spirited, warm, gentle and kind with much determination. ROLE CAST.

Captain Georg von Trapp (baritone, moves well, 35-45) A retired Austrian naval captain. Polished, yet
very military in the way he runs his life to repress his sadness over the death of his wife; underneath,
he is warm, understanding, and determined. ROLE CAST.

Max Detweiller (tenor/baritone, moves well, 30+) Charming and vital; a man of sophistication who
enjoys the good life; true and loyal friend to the von Trapp family. ROLE CAST.

Elsa Schrader (mezzo soprano, moves well, 35-45) A baroness of taste and elegance, sophisticated,
dignified and mature. ROLE CAST.

Mother Abbess (legit soprano, wide vocal range, 40+) Motherly, understanding, strong and
authoritative, but kind.

Sister Berthe (alto, moves well) Mistress of Novices, prudish, strait laced with a quick tongue, she is
less tolerant than other nuns. ROLE CAST.

Sister Margaretta (mezzo, moves well) Mistress of Postulants, very kind, understanding and
concerned. ROLE CAST.

Sister Sophia (soprano, moves well) Neither demanding nor critical, sticks with the rules. ROLE CAST.

Franz (non-singing, 30+) The von Trapp butler, rather formal but not without spirit, he is very German
and loyal to the Fascist cause. ROLE CAST.

Frau Schmidt (non-singing, 30+) The housekeeper, stoic, very little personality; she does her job
efficiently but without affection. Strong and somewhat dominating. ROLE CAST.

Herr Zeller (non-singing, 40+) Stern and unsmiling, a typical Nazi official whose primary concern is to
see that everyone toes the line. ROLE CAST.

Rolf Gruber (low tenor, dance, 17) Suitor to Liesl, telegram delivery boy, later Nazi soldier. A very
pleasant young man, somewhat aggressive but in a gentle way. ROLE CAST.

Liesl von Trapp (mezzo, dance, 16) The oldest child, blossoming into a young lady with an interest in
boys. She has a maternal edge to her and cares very deeply for her younger siblings. ROLE CAST.

Friedrich von Trapp (age 14) Tough exterior, very much trying to be “the man” of the family. ROLE
CAST.

Louisa von Trapp (age 13) Rebellious attitude. ROLE CAST.

Kurt von Trapp (age 10, falsetto) Gentle and mischievous. ROLE CAST.

Brigitta von Trapp (age 9) Smart, reads a lot. ROLE CAST.

Marta von Trapp (age 7) Very sweet and gentle. ROLE CAST.

Gretl von Trapp (age 6) Has the cute factor. ROLE CAST.

Violet: The company's Head Secretary and Mr. Hart's Administrative Assistant, she is a single mother
and typically stands up for what she believes in. Attractive, strong, ambitious. Gender: Female. Age:

Doralee: A young, sexy spitfire who works at Mr. Hart's office. She is proof that there is more to a

Judy: The new girl at the firm, she has been burned by her husband's affair and is searching for
personal empowerment. Insecure, determined, and hopeful. Gender: Female. Age: 30 to 35. Vocal

Franklin Hart: One of the firm's executives and a notorious chauvinist. He is capable of faking charm
but usually shows his true colors as an arrogant, self-absorbed boss. Gender: Male. Age: 45 to 50.

Roz Keith: The attentive office gossip queen and snitch. She has an unrequited love for Mr. Hart and
will do anything she can to win his approval. Gender: Female. Age: 35 to 45. Vocal range top: C5.

Joe: A handsome, young office accountant. Genuine and nice, and smitten with Violet. Gender: Male.

Dwayne: Doralee's attractive husband. He is very supportive of her professional pursuits. Gender:

Dick: Judy's soon-to-be ex-husband. An average guy, he is sporting a little less hair and a little more
paunch than he did ten years ago. Gender: Male. Age: 35 to 45. ROLE CAST.

Kathy: A secretary in Hart's office with a tendency to gossip. Gender: Female. Age: 30 to 40. Vocal

Margaret: A secretary in Hart's office with a tendency to drink. Gender: Female. Age: 30 to 40. ROLE
CAST.

Tinsworthy: Franklin Hart's boss and Chariman of the Board. A good man, who may be wiser to Hart's
ways than he lets on. Gender: Male. Age: 50 to 65. ROLE CAST.

Bright Star

Alice Murphy – Alice as a youth is a firecracker, Alice as an adult is buttoned up. Alice will appear as
both 16-17 and 36-37. Adult Alice is the editor of Asheville Southern Journal, she is smart, serious,
does not suffer fools with but also kind and haunted by her past.

Young Alice at age 16-17 is strong willed, independent and is destined ready for something greater
than her town has to offer. A very strong singer and comfortable in folk and bluegrass styles with a
strong belt. She is the star of the show. This role requires intimacy. Vocal range: F3-C5

Billy Cane – a young soldier returning home from WWII; an aspiring young writer; has a goofy charm,
and he is talented but unpolished and a little naive. Featured in multiple songs Age: early 20s Vocal
range: C3-A4

Daddy Cane – Billy’s father. Kind, if simple, man living alone in the woods following the death of his
wife, great father, great husband. Featured song “She’s Gone” and others. Vocal range: C3-A4

Margo Crawford – a small-town bookstore owner; smart as a whip, kind, Billy’s best friend, she has
feelings for Billy but he is too naive to see. Sweet warm folk voice. Featured song “Asheville” and
others. Age: early 20s Vocal range: B3-F#5

Daryl Ames – An assistant at the Asheville Southern Journal. Funny, with a dry and officious sense of
humor. Great comedic timing. Can be harsh in his directness but is innately likeable. Age: Open Vocal
range: C3-E4

Lucy Grant – A junior editor at the Asheville Southern Journal. Strong dancer and singer. Forthright
and provocative with a sharp sense of humor. Strong modern working woman who is also a flirt.
Featured song “Another Round” and others. Age: 20s Vocal range: A3-D5

Mama Murphy – Alice’s mother. A warm, loving, sensible woman. Strong singer with harmonies.
Featured in song “Please Don’t Take Him” and others. Vocal range: G3-C5

Daddy Murphy – Alice’s father; proud man with old world views on family and children. A strict, and
hard-working man, a poor but respected farmer. Featured song “Firmer Hand/Do Right” and others.
Vocal range: A2-G4

Mayor Josiah Dobbs – the Mayor of Zebulon; a political and financial powerbroker – an imposing and
controlling presence; interested in “protecting” his son’s future and his family name, but in reality, is
really only advancing his own self-interest and identity. He is ultimately pushed to a point of extreme
and irrevocable cruelty; the guilt breaks him. Featured song “A Man’s Gotta Do” and others. Vocal
range: A2-G4

Jimmy Ray Dobbs – Mayor Dobbs’ son and Alice’s first love, appears as age 16-17 and 36-37. Young

Jimmy Ray charming, well-built and intelligent; from a family of wealth and power and is being
groomed by his father for a similar future in the family business; an independent thinker who is not
afraid to stand up to his father for what he believes in; he has a sense of personal responsibility and
morality as well as a deep reserve of passion and emotion. An excellent musical theater singer
featured in multiple songs with a comfortable folk-pop style. This role requires intimacy. Vocal range:
C3-A4

TOMMY DEVITO (Lead) MALE, 30-40; strong tenor/baritone voice, comfortable with traditional four-
part harmonies; comfortable with narrative text; ability to play guitar a strong plus; a natural-born leader with appealing bad-boy quality. SUGGESTED AUDITION SONG: Earth Angel. ROLE CAST.

FRANKIE VALLI (Lead) MALE, 20-35; 5’9 or shorter; a strong tenor with sweet and strong falsetto
able to sing in the style of Frankie Valli; strong tenor to high A or Bb plus strong falsetto up to treble G;
charismatic and charming; comfortable with narrative text and has a gritty side as well as a polished
veneer; very comfortable with four-part harmonies. SUGGESTED AUDITION SONG: Walk Like A
Man

NICK MASSI (Lead) MALE, 30-40; strong bass/baritone voice, very comfortable with traditional four-
part harmonies; comfortable with narrative text; a quiet dreamer who longs for life after The Four Seasons. SUGGESTED AUDITION SONG: Big Girls Don’t Cry “silly boy...silly girl”. ROLE CAST.

BOB GAUDIO (Lead) MALE, 20-35; preferably tall; strong tenor/baritone voice; very comfortable with
traditional four-part harmonies; comfortable with narrative text; an intelligent, sensitive, and
introspective musical prodigy. SUGGESTED AUDITION SONG: December 63’ (Oh What A

and lyricist; an integral part of creating the magic of The Four Seasons. ROLE CAST.

Male 4. GYP DECARLO (Supporting) MALE, 45-55; tough, Mafioso type; a strong singer. ROLE

Male 5. BARRY BELSON (Chorus/Ensemble) MALE, 20-49; strong singer to play various roles
(friends, producers, etc.); strong tenor to high C; with a strong falsetto to G above high C; has the
ability to riff in rhythm-and-blues style. ROLE CAST.

Male 6. HANK MAJEWSKI (Chorus/Ensemble) MALE, 20-49; strong singer to play various roles
(friends, producers, etc.), bari-tenor voice down to a strong low G (low E a big plus); guitar and/or
