Synopsis: The play takes place in late August 1833 at a hedge-school in the townland of Baile Beag - an Irish speaking community in County Donegal. Strangers have arrived in town in the form of a detachment of Royal Engineers engaged on behalf of the British Army and Government to “standardize” the Gaelic name places of the vicinity by translating them into English. There is friction in the community and there is also love and romance between the native and the strangers.
SEEKING:
Manus: Male. 30s. The school master’s oldest son. He is pale faced, lightly built, intense, and works as an unpaid assistant – a monitor to his father. His clothes are shabby; and when he moves we see that he is lame. Northern Irish accent.
Sarah: Female. She could be any age from 17 to 35. Her speech impediment is so bad that all her life she has been considered non-verbal and she has accepted this condition; when she wishes to communicate, she grunts and makes unintelligible nasal sounds. She has a waiflike appearance. Northern Irish Accent.
Jimmy Jack: (Cast) Male. 60s. Known as the Infant Prodigy. He is a bachelor in his sixties, lives alone, and comes to evening classes partly for the company and partly for the intellectual stimulation. He is fluent in Latin and Greek but is in no way pedantic to him it is perfectly normal to speak these tongues. He never washes. For JIMMY the world of the gods and the ancient myths are as immediate as everyday life in the townland of Baile Beag. Northern Irish Accent.
Maire: Female. 20s. A local to the village and romantically linked to Manus. She is strong-minded, willful, funny, practical – all belying a huge romantic heart. Northern Irish Accent.
Doalty: Male 20s. A local to the village. He is open-minded, open-hearted, generous, and slightly thick. He is the life of a party and brings boundless energy wherever he goes. Northern Irish Accent.
Bridget: Female. 20s. Doalty’s side-kick. She is a fresh young girl, brimming with energy and laughter; she also possesses an instinctive cunning. Northern Irish accent.
Hugh: Male. 60s. The schoolmaster. An intelligent charismatic man with a residual dignity. Speaks Latin and Greek fluently. Drinks excessively. Northern Irish accent.
Owen: Male. 20s. Handsome leading man. Sophisticated having returned from working in the city. His manner is easy and charming. Everything he does is invested with consideration and enthusiasm. Northern Irish accent.
Lieutenant Yolland: Male. early 30s. English. Shy, awkward, intelligent, sensitive. He falls in love with the country, its lore, its mysticism, and its people –especially one. British accent.
Captain Lancey: Male. 40s-50s English, A crisp officer, expert in his field as cartographer but uneasy with people – especially civilians, especially foreign civilians like the natives of Ballybeg. His skill is with deeds, not words. British accent
