BREAKDOWN
ABOUT: A very funny look at the world of snooker – the British version of pool. Dylan Spokes, a fast-rising young star arrives for a championship tournament only to be confronted by the authorities warning him of the repercussions of match fixing. Before he knows it, Dylan’s forced into underhanded dealings with a cast of wildly colorful characters that include his ex-convict dad, saucy mum, quick-tongued manager and a renowned gangster, to boot. It’s a fast-paced comedy thriller where, in an exciting twist, the tournament unfolds live on stage.
All characters require a Yorkshire accent, except where specifically noted.
DYLAN SPOKES:20-mid-20s. Male. Working class. A rising star in the world of snooker. From a dysfunctional family – addict parents, failed out of school. Found a life raft in vegetarianism and Buddhist principles, and projects a calm demeanor in the midst of his chaotic life. He has some street smarts, but there’s an innocence and purity at his core. Rough, not shiny.
BOBBY SPOKES: Early – Mid 50s. Male. DYLAN’s father. Working class. A bit of a fool, a bit of a mess. Always eating or drinking. He is a liability to DYLAN’s career, though he thoroughly believes he always knows best. He rents out rooms to college students in lieu of a proper job. Utterly without ambition. A guy who has never been outside his small corner of the world. A dim bulb. Strong comedic chops
ELEANOR SARGENT: Early-Late 20s. Female. Working class. She attended drama school and has real talent. She spent some time living a hard lifestyle after she graduated, working as a cocktail waitress and an exotic dancer to make ends meet. She grew tired of the party life, and found a lucrative career in grifting. Her grifter persona is that of tough, no-nonsense cop. She is flawless, but this isn’t the life she imagined for herself. ANY ETHNICITY.
WAXY BUSH: Mid 40s-Mid 50s. Transgender female. A crime boss. When she was living as a male (Mickey), she was a tough, violent gangster. A really scary and unpredictable character. And that hasn’t changed. She owns every room she’s in, with charm and the threat of danger. Confident, funny, and prone to malapropisms. A keen judge of character – sees weakness immediately and knows how to exploit it. ANY ETHNICITY.
STELLA: Early – Mid 50s. Female. DYLAN’s mother. Working class. A quick-witted former (and current?) addict. Haggard, materialistic, and motivated by revenge. She wants what’s hers, and has no principles other than that. Strong comedic chops.
DANNY KILLEEN: Early 60s. Male. STELLA’S boyfriend. Irish, working class. An old-school grifter. When grifting he very convincingly puts on the air of a drunken, homeless vagrant. But his real persona is one of seen-it-all, sophistication and utter competence.
MOHOMMAD BUTT: 30s – 40s. Male. Middle-Eastern or South Asian. A grifter. His put on persona is besuited, authoritative, a police-type. He’s the “bad cop.” His true persona is that of a seedy, working class Lancashire crook. Physically imposing. Comic deadpan.
TONY DANLINO: 30s. Male. DYLAN’s manager. Slick, addicted to his cellphone. Always on the move, shaking hands, looking for angles, and passing out his business card. Pure opportunist. All phony affability and overfamiliarity. Small time, but acts like he’s big time. Psyched to have a piece of DYLAN, who he’s smart enough to know is the real deal. ANY ETHNICITY.
REFEREE/SETH/STEWARD: Mid 30s-50s. Male. ANY ETHNICITY.
SETH – Working class. A strongman for the group of conmen.
REFEREE – A professional. Articulate. In his element at the snooker table.
