BREAKDOWN
SYNOPSIS:
How does a fractured family heal when unresolved emotions of the past color the present? Can a city reshape itself if it means tearing open old, still-tender wounds? And where in a diverse but segregated city can communities find common ground, mutual dignity and a true sense of home? These questions collide into Yolonda Mourning, an independent consultant on a vast project to take down a span of highway that has long divided Salt City. When she leaves her husband and teenage son and moves to the heart of trendy downtown, a diverse cast of characters forces Yolonda to confront the Salt City’s complicated history around race, class and urban renewal, and to reckon with her role as architect of the broken bridges in her own family. Moving, funny, poignant, and current, salt/city/blues is a fresh, contemporary new play set in a fictionalized Syracuse and to the music of the blues. A Cold Read world premiere production.
SEEKING:
NOTE: Actors MUST be available for a workshop in NYC, April 1-4.
PROF D: he/him/his, African American, actually 81 years old (so he says). Imagines himself a younger man until his age gives him an advantage. A kind of folk historian. A kind of narrator. He can go from folksy common sense to erudite within in a single utterance. He always has a book. Then he’s off his meds maybe he hears voices, sees things others do not see. An aficionado of the Blues, particularly the music of the women of the Blues. Likes to dance to the Blues.
CARRIE SIMMONS: she/her/hers, White American, late 30s to late 40’s. Angry. Tough but deeply feeling. A military (Army) vet. Served in Iraq. Has a dragon tattoo on her neck. Comes out of the poor white community of Salt City. The bartender at Tipsy’s bar. Dances with convincing soul.
YOLONDA MOURNING: she/her/hers, African American, early to late 40s. Smart (with blind spots). Put together, or so it would seem. Exudes power and confidence. She’s got her own. Bourbon is her drink. She has a commanding physical presence and looks great with a rocks glass in her hand. She can be demanding and insensitive. Spells her name with two o’s. She can dance (R&B).
FISH: he/him/his, White American, early 40’s to early 50’s (it’s hard to tell). Addicted to alcohol. A mess, but an interesting mess. His sharp wit is dulled some by his addiction. Knows how to offer a toast. A good storyteller. Half Irish (mother), half Jewish (father). Raised Catholic in the Dublin Heights (Irish) neighborhood of Salt City. He is an ace mimic of Irish and Jewish dialects.
MALCOLM (a.k.a. “MALIK”): he/him/his, African American, 18+ to play 17. Has a way with words. Can cut to the quick. He is charming. He plays the trumpet. A bit of an “old head” – wise beyond his years but still young. He wants to be a blues musician. He has renamed himself “Malik.” He’s a good, sensitive kid who is angry at finding himself in the middle of his parents’ broken relationship. He’s developed a bit of a quick temper. Yolonda’s son. NOTE: Ideally a competent trumpet/horn player.
