Tracy Turnblad — (THIS ROLE IS CURRENTLY FILLED) Our story's unsuspecting protagonist. Large and in charge: confident, talented, and incredibly determined. A romantic with a good heart and a desire to cut up the dance floor. Always on top of the latest trends. Race: White. Age: 15–20. Vocal range: G3 to G5.
Corny Collins — (THIS ROLE IS CURRENTLY FILLED) The charismatic host of the Corny Collins Show. Good-looking and smooth-talking; a genuinely nice guy both on and off camera. Race: White. Age: 25–35. Vocal range: D3 to A4.
Edna Turnblad — (THIS ROLE IS CURRENTLY FILLED) Tracy’s big and blonde mother. A working housewife who has lost her confidence and dream to be a plus-size clothing designer. Boisterous and commanding. Often played by a male in drag. Race: White. Age: 30–50. Vocal range: F3 to G5.
Penny Pingleton — (THIS ROLE IS CURRENTLY FILLED) Tracy’s best friend and dorky sidekick. Not the brightest girl, but with good intentions. Bursting to get free of her mother's dominating control; she falls for Seaweed with childlike curiosity. Race: White. Age: 15–20. Vocal range: A3 to G5.
Velma Von Tussle — (THIS ROLE IS CURRENTLY FILLED) Amber’s mother and the director of the Corny Collins show. A devious taskmaster and snobby racist; the former Miss Baltimore Crabs who will go to any length to ensure her daughter is the next big thing. Race: White. Age: 45–55. Vocal range: G3 to E5.
Amber Von Tussle — (THIS ROLE IS CURRENTLY FILLED) Link’s girlfriend and Tracy's nemesis. Pretty, thin, shallow, snobby, and racist. Can't dance but expects to win Miss Baltimore Hairspray; always needs to be the center of attention. Race: White. Age: 15–20. Vocal range: A3 to F5.
Link Larkin — The star heartthrob on the Corny Collins show. Extremely attractive and talented; hoping to get his big break with a recording contract, he unexpectedly falls for Tracy. Race: White. Age: 15–20. Vocal range: G3 to A5.
Seaweed J. Stubbs — Tracy’s classmate and friend, who is discriminated against due to his skin color. Cocky but surprisingly lovable; talented in song and dance. He falls for Penny. Race: Black. Age: 15–20. Vocal range: F3 to D5.
Little Inez — Seaweed’s little sister. Race: Black.
Motormouth Maybelle — (THIS ROLE IS CURRENTLY FILLED) Seaweed and Little Inez's mother; she also appears as the Guest DJ on the Corny Collins Negro Day show. Big, bold, beautiful, and proud; sassy and confident. Race: Black. Age: 40–50. Vocal range: F3 to E5.
Wilbur Turnblad — (THIS ROLE IS CURRENTLY FILLED) Tracy’s simpleminded and kind father. He owns a joke shop and supports his daughter in spite of everything else; loves his wife, Edna, very much. Race: White. Age: 55–65. Vocal range: A3 to A5.
Prudy Pingleton — (THIS ROLE IS CURRENTLY FILLED) Penny’s strict mother. Very conservative, controlling, and closed-minded. Race: White. Age: 40–50. Vocal range: D4 to B4.
