BREAKDOWN
Additional roles we be played by undergraduate, graduate, and recent graduate student apprentices, and community members.
Friar Lawrence: The Friar could be a Parish Priest, a Minister, Counselor, or a Youth Pastor. There is not a specific age, gender, racial, or ethnic description for the character. Romeo and Juliet turn to the Friar, who marries them in secret. Perhaps in fear of the powerful families, the Friar provides the impetus for Juliet's flight from home, which ultimately leads to her suicide.
Lady Capulet: Mother of Juliet. There is not a specific age, gender, racial, or ethnic description for the character. When faced with her daughter Juliet's plea for help in not being forced into a marriage she does not want, Lady Capulet chooses to abandon her.
Lord Capulet: Father of Juliet. There is not a specific age, gender, racial, or ethnic description for the character. When his daughter begs not to marry as her father has arranged, Lord Capulet threatens to beat her and turn her out of the family's home.
Juliet Capulet: Juliet is the only daughter of the Capulets. There is not a specific gender, racial, or ethnic description for the character. Juliet has a tremendous gift for language and discovers enormous agency during the play. Despite this, violence between the families and the real or perceived barriers imposed on Juliet ultimately contribute to her suicide.
Romeo Montague: Romeo is the only son of the Montagues. There is not a specific gender, racial, or ethnic description for the character. Romeo's witty wordplay almost equals that of Juliet, and they fall in love. Violence between the families and the real or perceived barriers imposed on Romeo ultimately contribute to his suicide. (Stage combat experience recommended.)
Mercutio: Romeo's best friend, and a wilder spirit, Mercutio is a blood relative of Prince Escalus. There is not a specific gender, racial, or ethnic description for the character. Mercutio may be in love with Romeo; that affection may be one that eschews romantic love. Mercutio's behavior leads to a fight with Tybalt, and Mercutio is killed. (Stage combat experience recommended.)
