In accordance with the New York City Executive Order No. 228, Soho Rep. will be requiring proof of vaccination for all staff positions. This includes all actors, creative team, front of house and crew. Masks will be required to be worn by anyone who is not onstage actively rehearsing. Performances will be performed without masks. Audiences will be required to show proof of vaccination before entering the theatre and will be masked. These requirements are subject to change in response to CDC recommendations, state and local government regulations, and/or union regulations.

PUBLIC OBSCENITIES is a bilingual play, in English and Bengali, about a queer couple – Choton and Raheem – who return to Choton's deteriorating family homestead in Calcutta, a house still haunted by the disappearance of his grandfather four decades earlier. When Raheem discovers a roll of film sitting undeveloped inside the grandfather’s old Rolleicord camera, invisible truths begin bubbling to the surface.

BREAKDOWN
PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Please record in a well-lit area (with a simple background if possible) where we can clearly hear you. For the slate, start with a full-body shot and zoom in or cut to a close-up (bottom of the frame should be at the shoulders and leave a sliver of space above the head for the top frame). The audition can be in a medium wide shot, not too close but not too far.
Please slate your name, your preferred gender pronouns, and the name of the piece your monologue comes from. Prepare a 90 second contemporary monologue.

SEEKING:
CHOTON (CAST) (He/Him, 30s to 40s, Bengali American). Choton is a queer Bengali American PhD student who moved to the States from Kolkata when he was 5. He's fully fluent in Bengali and American English and code-switches fluidly between the two. Language is his currency. He is energetic, intellectual, verbose. CHARACTER SPEAKS ENGLISH WITH AN AMERICAN ACCENT, BUT IS COMPLETELY FLUENT IN BENGALI.
RAHEEM (He/Him, 20s to 30s, Black American). Choton's boyfriend, a queer Black American cinematographer. He is visiting India with Choton for the first time. His demeanor is confident and down-to-earth, but Choton brings out a playful side to him. He is an astute listener and observer, which makes him an excellent artist.
PISHIMONI (She/Her, 60s to 70s, Bengali). Choton's aunt, she is a Bengali woman who has lived her whole life in Kolkata. She speaks English, but went to Bengali-medium schools, so her fluency is somewhat limited. She is warm and welcoming, but she is also endlessly curious and has no verbal filter. She has gained weight since her hysterectomy. Speaking English exhausts her. CHARACTER SPEAKS FLUENT BENGALI WITH AN AUTHENTIC BENGALI ACCENT.
PISHE (He/Him, 60s to 70s, Bengali). Choton’s uncle, Pishe studied partially in Bengali-medium and partially in English-medium schools, so his English is a little more fluent than his wife, Pishimoni's. He lacks some of her outward warmth and gets irritated quickly. He spends most of his time playing virtual pool on his computer and flirting online with a woman in Minnesota. CHARACTER IS FLUENT IN BOTH ENGLISH AND BENGALI AND IS ABLE TO SPEAK WITH AN AUTHENTIC BENGALI ACCENT.
JITESH (He/Him, 50s to 60s, Bengali). Jitesh is Choton's grandmother's live-in caretaker. He is a local Bengali man who has been with the family since he was 12 years old. Quietly observant. He is a singer. Speaks only Bengali, no English. CHARACTER SPEAKS FLUENT BENGALI WITH AN AUTHENTIC BENGALI ACCENT.
SHOU (He/They, 20s, Bengali). Shou is a femme-of-center queer Bengali person. Met Choton on Grindr. He is a dancer. Graceful, curious, flirtatious. He studied in Bengali-medium schools so has somewhat limited English fluency. CHARACTER SPEAKS FLUENT BENGALI WITH AN AUTHENTIC BENGALI ACCENT.
THAMMI (She/Her, 80s to 90s, Bengali). Choton’s paternal grandmother, Pishimoni’s mother. Bedridden, with dementia. CHARACTER SPEAKS FLUENT BENGALI WITH AN AUTHENTIC BENGALI ACCENT.
SEBANTI (She/They, 40s to 50s, Bengali). Sebanti is a trans-woman, and a friend of Shou’s. Self-confident, witty, sharp. CHARACTER SPEAKS FLUENT BENGALI WITH AN AUTHENTIC BENGALI ACCENT.
DAD (He/Him, 60s to 70s, Bengali). Choton’s father. An academic, he lives in California, and his English is Americanized. Appears briefly on FaceTime. CHARACTER SPEAKS FLUENT BENGALI WITH AN AUTHENTIC BENGALI ACCENT
