BREAKDOWN

[NOURA/NORA]
An Architect. Whip-Smart, a portrait of middle-age femininity, devoted mother. A stuckness has engulfed her but she still has her capacity for humor. Originally from Mosul, Iraq. Now an immigrant living in New York City. Mid to late 40’s.

[TAREQ/TIM]
Noura’s husband. Charismatic, gentle, funny and generous. A former surgeon, originally from Baghdad. Now a hospitalist working in an ER in New York. Mid to late 40’s

[RAFA'A]
Noura’s childhood neighbor from Mosul. A close friend of the family and a surrogate uncle to Yazen. Elegant and private. Noura’s soulmate. An OBGYN. Mid to late 40’s.

[MARYAM]
A young physicist from Mosul. Now in her first semester of graduate studies in California. Unapologetic, ready to run for her life at all times. Mid 20’s.

[YAZEN/ALEX]
Noura and Tareq’s son. 11-14 years old. Intelligent, precocious and astute but still a boy. Very American.

Story line: It’s Christmas Eve in New York City, and Noura — a newly minted U.S. citizen — is preparing to host an Iraqi meal and growing more homesick by the minute. Her husband and son have fully embraced their American names and identities, but Noura feels restless and displaced. Even so, she eagerly welcomes her dinner guests, who come bearing gifts and a big surprise that sends everyone spinning. Inspired by Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, this brilliant new play is a poignant exploration of motherhood, marriage and identity in modern America.
