Marty’s Back in Town takes place in Manhattan, in the 80s. These people are New Yorkers accent not necessary. It is about a Jewish family, led by an illiterate but dedicated immigrant mother, who single-handedly fights through the tenement jungle of the Jewish ghetto – overpopulated Brownsville – for the survival of her children. Fast forward 30 years, the children have grown but now are faced with the option of receiving the oldest son, the black sheep of the family, back to the familial bosom because he may die shortly. The play encompasses the dark humor and tragedy of the Brooklyn Jewish ghetto of the last 50 years. Yet the play is about the survival of each member of this hilarious but combative family. How do they handle the animosity and love they feel for the other? You’ll laugh till you cry.
