HAMLET
SYNOPSIS: Robert O'Hara, who directed the landmark box office hit Slave Play, returns to CTG with a dynamic new version of Hamlet set in Los Angeles in the style of Film Noir and inspired by the work of David Lynch, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, and Salvador Dali. Half made up of the original (pared down) Shakespearean text and half an all-new Knives Out-like interrogation of the story of Prince of Denmark, we are seeking actors who can move easily between Shakespearean verse and contemporary suspense.
ALL ROLES are also AS CAST and will be doubling into multiple roles.
ALL must have comic ability and be comfortable with both Shakespearean and contemporary language.
HAMLET (as cast) – Male-identified, 20s-early 30s. Hamlet is the son of Gertrude and Hamlet Sr. His father has just died, and his uncle has become king. Youthful, entitled, easy about sexual relationships. He has supposedly been visited by a ghost who told him his father was murdered by his uncle. And as cast. Actors of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition.
THE GHOST/ DETECTIVE FORTINBRAS (as cast) – Any gender, 50s-60s. THE GHOST is the specter of Hamlet’s recently deceased father. DETECTIVE FORTINBRAS arrives in the second half of our play to get to the bottom of what has happened. Dry, humorous, and smart (although maybe you don’t know just how smart he is). Think Daniel Craig’s character in Knives Out. And as cast. Actors of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition.
GERTRUDE (as cast) – Female-identified, 50s-60s. Hamlet’s mother and the queen. She then married Claudius shortly after her husband died. Formidable. And as cast. Actors of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition.
OPHELIA (as cast) – Female-identified or Non-Binary, 20s-early 30s. Ophelia is Polonius’ daughter and Laertes’ sister. She has been in a relationship with Hamlet. Also young and entitled. And as cast. Actors of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition.
HORATIO (as cast) – Male-identified or Non-Binary, 20s-early 30s. Horatio is a long-time trusted friend and at times lover of Hamlet’s. Also young and entitled. And as cast. Actors of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition.
LAERTES/ROSENCRANTZ (as cast) – Any gender, 20s-30s. LAERTES is also the child of Polonius and sibling of Ophelia. ROSENCRANTZ is a childhood friend of Hamlet and along with Guildenstern a bit of a nepo baby in the kingdom. Put together with expensive clothes that work to look like they are not. Always at the right parties. And as cast. Actors of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition.
CLAUDIUS (as cast) – Male-identified, 40s. The newly crowned King of Denmark and new husband to Gertrude. He is Hamlet’s uncle—the hotter brother of Hamlet’s father. An expert manipulator. And as cast. Actors of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition.
POLONIUS (as cast) – Male-identified, 40s-50s. Polonius is a counselor to the new king and queen. He is Ophelia and Laertes’ father. Equally adept at and sympathetic to Claudius’ manipulations. And as cast. Actors of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition.
GUILDENSTERN (as cast) – Any gender, 20s-early 30s. GUILDENSTERN is a childhood friend of Hamlet and along with Rosencrantz a bit of a nepo baby in the kingdom. Put together with expensive clothes that work to look like they are not. At all the right parties. And as cast. Actors of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition.
FIRST PLAYER/ ATTENDANT (as cast) – Any gender, 30s-50s. Player is a Performer with a capital “P”. A Wannabe-Influencer-Movie/TV Star. And as cast. Actors of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition.
HEAD ATTENDANT (as cast) – Any gender, 30s-50s. Keeper of the house and its many secrets. And as cast. Actors of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition.
GRAVEDIGGER / ATTENDANT (as cast) – Any gender, 40s-60s. Groundskeeper and Part-time Gravedigger. Actors of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition.
