Breakdown
ABOUT THE PLAY: Linda and Michael, successful writers who happen to be married to each other, thrive on the give-and-take of their unusually honest relationship. But when they decide to share their diaries, the boundaries between past and present, fact and fiction, trust and betrayal begin to break down. No life, it turns out, is an open book.
Michael Waterman: Mid to late 40’s but also 20’s in flash backs. Michael is an intellectual who loves: witty repartee, a woman who can hold her own, being right and being challenged. Indeed. He is a writer who wants to be a serious author, and though he had a tough time getting his first novel published, every book thereafter has been a best seller turned movie. Being a popular writer wasn’t quite the success he thought it would be. He is meticulous, loves whiskey and is intoxicated by language and the sound of his own voice. Lovably pompous, handsome, impressively intelligent and self-deprecating. Married to Linda.
Linda Waterman: Mid to late 40’s but also 20’s in flash backs. Smart, authoritative, attractive, holds her own and will stop at nothing to win. Writer of one best seller turned college professor, becoming the writer she most feared she’d be. She is charming, through her brutal, self-deprecating honesty. Dominates Michael and he likes it. Loves a good cabernet. Dying of aggressive brain cancer will be dead in 3 weeks. She wants to deal with the quiet lies that have hovered in the corners of her marriage before she passes away.
Abby Drake Late 30’s but early 20’s in flash backs. Abby has beauty, youth, wit and is therefore a very dangerous foe. She quietly stalks her revenge but ends up falling victim to her game. She is described by Michael as achingly vibrant. She has a damaged secret past. She knows people and knows how to get what she wants from them. She isn’t a villain and doesn’t abuse this power. Rather she holds her cards close to her chest and people are drawn to her. She is incredibly well read, affluent but doesn’t flaunt it and has that enigmatic quality that is priceless. She’s the girl every other girl would love to hate, but she’s so great that they can’t, and she kind of knows it.
