JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
SEEKING
NARRATOR: Soaring belt/mix with soprano notes vocal range. Vibrant, energetic, charismatic performer, with a superior voice. Think Beyoncé as part of Destiny’s Child and then breaking out. Moves well. The narrator must be adept at both being the focal point and then “blending” into the scene. The narrator is onstage almost the entire show. An animated and dynamic storyteller.
JOSEPH: Jacob’s favorite son. Joseph early on shows a talent for interpreting dreams and telling the future. A charismatic singer. Think Harry Styles. Honest and likable with good intent and a dazzling smile. Humble but proud and able to transition to the leader of a nation. Must believe in himself and his convictions. Vocal range: high tenor.
JACOB: Aged patriarch. He overly dotes on Joseph, to the exclusion of his other sons. Baritone vocal range.
PHARAOH: The most powerful man in Egypt. Pharaoh is considered a god (goddess) on earth. Should be an outgoing, engaging entertainer, able to take the stage and connect with an audience. Singer with good comic timing. Think more Michael Bublé than the “Elvis Presley” style.
POTIPHAR: A powerful and rich Egyptian and Joseph’s employer. Eccentric and charismatic song and dance man. Might double as a brother.
MRS. POTIPHAR: Beautiful and scheming. Excellent dancer who sings. Think Lady Gaga. Doubles as a wife.
JOSEPH’S 11 BROTHERS, JACOB’S OTHER SONS: High energy & very active. A diverse group of singers/dancers. Strong unique characters who sing harmony. A wide range of dance/performance styles from KâPop/Boy Band to Cowboy Carter to Calypso. Although acting usually as a group, they each have their distinct personalities, talents, and flaws. They sing and dance their way through many situations and places. Conniving, self-centered, and jealous of Joseph’s high aspirations and their father’s favoritism toward Joseph, they change their ways in the end. They are:
- REUBEN: Eldest son of Jacob; sings “Those Canaan Days” in the style of Maurice Chevalier/French bistro; needs good comic timing.
- SIMEON: Second son; sings “One More Angel in Heaven” in a country western style.
- LEVI: Third son; sings “One More Angel in Heaven” in a country western style.
- NAPHTHALI: Sixth son; sings “The Baker’s Song.”
- ISAACHAR: Ninth son; sings “The Butler’s Song.”
- ASHER: Eighth son; sings “Those Canaan Days” in the style of Maurice Chevalier/French bistro; needs good comic timing.
- DAN: Fifth son; sings “Those Canaan Days” in the style of Maurice Chevalier/French bistro; needs good comic timing.
- ZEBULON: Tenth son; sings “Benjamin’s Calypso” in a reggae style.
- GAD: Seventh son; sings “Benjamin’s Calypso” in a reggae style.
- BENJAMIN: Twelfth son; sings “One More Angel in Heaven” in a country western style.
- JUDAH: Fourth son; sings “Benjamin’s Calypso” in a reggae style.
FEMALE ENSEMBLE: 11 wives to the 11 brothers. High energy & very active. Singers/dancers. Strong unique characters who sing harmony. A wide range of dance and vocal performance styles.
