Mexodus is a live-looping hip-hop musical written and performed by Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson, choreographed by Tony Thomas, and directed by David Mendizábal. The show reveals a hidden chapter of American history, following a freedom seeker and an unlikely ally who forge a bond by crossing the Rio Grande into Mexico rather than taking the Underground Railroad north. The production won four Lucille Lortel Awards including Outstanding Musical, four Outer Critics Circle Awards, three Drama Desk Awards, one Off Broadway Alliance Award for Best Musical, and one Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Musical. The Chicago premiere at the historic Studebaker Theater represents a homecoming for both Quijada and Robinson, who have strong ties to the city where early development of the musical took place.
