Matthew R. Smith Trio Comes to Feinstein's/54 Below

FEINSTEIN'S/54 BELOW presents The Matthew R. Smith Trio, consisting of Matthew R. Smith (bass and compositions), John Sheehy (piano), and Eric Ficarra (drums), are proud to bring their exciting and fresh approach of modern jazz to Feinstein's/54 Below. This thrilling group will be performing music from their debut album, Vernal Equinox, which contains compositions with no conceptual boundaries and a deep sense of groove, atmosphere, and emotion. The trio is strongly cohesive and complementary to each other with a strong undercurrent of aural sensitivity and interaction. Their improvisations are those of sonic, rhythmic and textural interplay as each improvisor contributes and displays their own expression and statement. Matthew R. Smith is a bassist, composer and educator based in New Jersey and is a product of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia where he earned his B.M. in instrumental performance and M.M. in jazz studies. Having performed with many groups and ensembles of various styles for over a decade, this group is his debut as a leader and showcases his personal voice as a bassist and composer as well as displaying a dynamic and organic approach to the classic jazz trio configuration.
