2cents Theatre Extends DEN OF THIEVES Through 2/21

2Cents Theatre, the producers of the critically-acclaimed productions of the hit musicals Rent and Fugitive Songs is thrilled to announce that their smash-hit, critically-acclaimed production of DEN OF THIEVES, written by 2015 Pulitzer Prize winning author Stephen Adly Guirgis and directed by Eric Augusztiny isEXTENDING through SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 21 at the Hudson Guild Theatre, 6539 Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood.

Maggie is a newly single, junk-food-binging shoplifter looking to change her life and her self-hating ways. Paul is her passionately convicted, formerly four-hundred-pound compulsive-overeating sponsor in a twelve-step program for recovering thieves. Maggie's jealous ex-boyfriend is a charismatic wannabe Puerto Rican small-time thief of uncertain ancestry named Flaco who spins a grammatically challenged but persuasive yarn about seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars in unprotected drug money sitting in a safe in a downtown disco guarded by an easily distracted crackhead. This dubious and ragtag would-be criminal crew is rounded out by Flaco's new girlfriend, the fabulous Boochie - a malaprop-slinging topless dancer who refuses to let her troubled childhood or her third-grade reading level stand in the way of her inevitable path to fame, fortune and fur.

When things don't quite go according to plan, this bickering quartet of hapless thieves finds themselves at the mercy of Louie "The Little Tuna" Pescatore, a reluctant, donut-ingesting heir to the criminal empire run by his father -"The Big Tuna" - who has left him in charge for the weekend. The penalty for stealing from the Tuna is death -"Ba Da Bing, Ba Da Boom." But Louie offers them a break: "I need one body and three thumbs, you can choose the who, whys and wherefores among yourselves." Tied to chairs and able to move only their mouths, they must now fight for their lives by out-arguing each other as to who deserves to live. Verbal gymnastics and the struggle for self-awareness, self-acceptance and self-love produce a high-octane battle for survival that's not resolved until the last donut falls.

ABOUT THE CREATIVE TEAM

STEPHEN ADLY GUIRGIS (Playwright) is a member and former co-artistic director of LAByrinth Theater Company. His plays have been produced on five continents and throughout the United States. They include Our Lady of 121st Street (Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics Circle Best Play Nominations),Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train (Edinburgh Festival Fringe First Award, Barrymore Award, Olivier Nomination for London's Best New Play), In Arabia, We'd All Be Kings (2007 LA Drama Critics Best Play, Best Writing Award), The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (10 best Time Magazine & Entertainment Weekly), and The Little Flower of East Orange (with Ellen Burstyn & Michael Shannon). All five plays were directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman and were originally produced by LAByrinth.

His most recent play, Between Riverside and Crazy, received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for 2015. His 2011 play, The Motherf***er with the Hat (6 Tony nominations, including Best Play), was directed by Anna D. Shapiro and marked his third consecutive world premiere co-production with The Public Theater and LAByrinth.

In London, his plays have premiered at The Donmar Warehouse, The Almeida (dir: Rupert Goold), The Hampstead (Robert Delamere), and at The Arts Theater in the West End. Other plays include Den of Thieves (Labyrinth, HERE, HAI, Black Dahlia) and Dominica The Fat Ugly Ho (dir: Adam Rapp) for the 2006 E.S.T. Marathon. He has received the Yale Wyndham-Campbell Prize, a PEN/Laura Pels Award, a Whiting Award, and a TCG fellowship. He is also a New Dramatists Alumnae and a member of MCC's Playwright's Coalition, The Ojai Playwrights Festival, New River Dramatists, and Labyrinth Theater Company.

As an actor, he has appeared in theater, film and television, including roles in Kenneth Lonergan's film "Margaret", Todd Solondz's "Palindromes," and Brett C Leonard's "Jailbait" opposite Michael Pitt. A former violence prevention specialist and H.I.V. educator, he lives in New York City.

ERIC AUGUSZTINY (Director) Recent directing credits include 2Cents' Acting Out INK Fest (a festival of female playwrights), the Annual ALAP Play Reading Festival, and a site-specific play at the Hollywood Recreational Center while associate producing with Moveable Piece, theatre in unexpected places. Past credits from the Seattle Rep, A Contemporary Theatre, The Empty Space, La MaMa, Judson Poets' Theater, American Theatre of Actors, Dallas Theatre Center, Mark Taper Forum. Trained as both an actor and a director, he studied acting with Stella Adler at her Studio of Acting in New York and earned an MFA in directing from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts Theatre Program. A contributing artist with the Compassionate Eye Foundation, he's a community activist in Los Angeles where he serves on the Board of Directors of the West Hills Neighborhood Council.
