Lyssa was recorded during lockdown and has two themes at its heart: a celebration of female power and live performance. It features a re-orchestrated performance of 'Trad' from Nadine Shah's album Kitchen Sink.

OPERA America has announced the selection of Douglas Kearney as  the inaugural recipient of the Campbell Opera Librettist Prize. Kearney will receive a $7,000 award  to support his creative and career development. Conceived and funded by acclaimed librettist and  lyricist Mark Campbell, the Prize is the first award in American opera that specifically recognizes the work of  the opera librettist.

Any of the wonderful mezzos who appear on the NY Festival of Song’s “How About Those Mezzos!” gala could easily be called “a girl singer” --as in “the females who used to sing with the Big Bands in the ‘40s”--as well under their usual hats as opera singers. The proof: There wasn’t an aria to be heard on the program (which will be available on demand through the end of the month), co-hosted by NYFOS chief Steven Blier and mezzo Rebecca Jo Loeb, an up and comer to watch. (Blier also supplied the piano accompaniment on a half dozen entries.) They sang everything from Edith Piaf, Reynaldo Hahn and Alberto Ginastera to Antonio Carlos Jobim and Irving Berlin, all in styles that sounded little like anything you might hear at the Met, Covent Garden or the Wiener Staatsoper. Three Divas showcases sopranos Ailyn Pérez and Nadine Sierra and mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, live from the Opéra Royal-Château de Versailles, in France, on May 22. Opera Singer Emily Hardman Gives Birth in a Car on a New Jersey Highway

Emily Hardman was in the car with her husband, Travis Hardman, on Route 78 in New Jersey on the morning of May 15. At 5:47 a.m., baby girl Rosemary Claire Hardman was born at milepost 20.2 on the eastbound side of the highway in Lebanon.
