- May 09, 2014 Live opera, “up close and personal,” returns for three days to Southern California with the Los Angeles Metropolitan Opera's (LAMet) June 2014 production of Mozart's brilliant comic opera DON GIOVANNI. The loves, debaucheries, and supernatural punishment of the title character, the rake Don Juan, will come memorably to life at First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica on Sunday June 8th at 2:30pm. The production then moves to Good Samaritan Hospital's All Souls Chapel in downtown Los Angeles Saturday June 14th at 7:00pm, and Sunday June 15th at 3:00pm. Known for an intensely moving portrayal of the title character, Furlanetto stars in this musically lush and romantic homage to Cervantes' iconic hero, Don Quixote. - May 08, 2014 The Canadian Opera Company regrets to announce that Italian tenor Giuseppe Filianoti will not be returning to the company's production of Roberto Devereux, currently in performance at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. As previously announced, Filianoti withdrew from the title role for the first three of seven scheduled performances, and circumstances continue to prevent his return to the stage. American tenor Leonardo Capalbostepped into the role on April 25, 29 and May 3, 2014 and was met with overwhelming popular and critical acclaim for his portrayal of Roberto Devereux.

- May 06, 2014 Minnesota Opera is pleased to announce it will present Cold Mountain, a new opera by the 2010 Pulitzer Prize winner in music, Jennifer Higdon. This co-commission and co-produced opera with The Santa Fe Opera and Opera Philadelphia is based on the eponymous bestselling novel by Charles Frazier. Cold Mountain is the powerful account of one soldier, W. P. Inman, who deserts the Confederate Army as the war is coming to an end and makes his way back to his home on Cold Mountain. The novel won the 1997 National Book Award and was made into a film in 2003, which was nominated for seven Academy Awards. The Santa Fe Opera will present the world premiere in the summer of 2015, which marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War.

An American Soldier features music by composer Huang Ruo and a libretto by David Henry Hwang. This new work, to be performed in English, is the second hourlong opera created under the auspices of the American Opera Initiative, WNO's commissioning program for contemporary American opera. An American Soldier is directed by David Paul and a chamber orchestra is conducted by Steven Jarvi; both are alumni of WNO's Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program.
