American Opera Projects Receives Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Grant by BWW News Desk
- September 10, 2014 American Opera Projects (AOP) has announced that it has been awarded a major grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The $200,000, active through December 2016, will support artistic initiatives by AOP: the Composers & the Voice and First Chance programs. The primary focus of Composers & the Voice is to give composers and librettists extensive experience working collaboratively with singers on writing for the voice and contemporary opera stage.

- September 09, 2014 German bass Tobias Kehrer will make his Met debut this season as Sarastro in six performances of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. The performances—on October 21, 25 matinee, 27, 31, November 3, 8 matinee—will be Kehrer's American debut. He replaces Franz-Josef Selig, who has withdrawn for health reasons.

Besides creating the role of Michele in San Francisco Opera's world premiere production of Two Women, the Tucker Award-winning tenor returns to the Metropolitan Opera for a pair of house role debuts, reprising his star turn as Alfredo -- also seen this season at the Vienna State Opera -- in La traviata, and singing Camille in Susan Stroman's new staging of The Merry Widow. He makes his professional role debut as Ferrando in Così fan tutte at Houston Grand Opera, and house debuts at both Austin Lyric Opera, in the title role of a new Roméo et Juliette, and London's Wigmore Hall, where he launches the season with a solo recital in the prestigious Rosenblatt Series. Costello also joins his wife, soprano Ailyn Pérez, for romantic duets from their recent hit album, Love Duets, with the BBC Symphony at London's Barbican Hall, and on a U.S. duo recital tour to the opera houses of Washington, Dallas, San Diego, and Philadelphia.

The festivities will begin on the lawn outside of the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. with a red carpet entrance featuring models in custom-designed gowns based on the themes of this season's operas. They continue with a sumptuous black-tie Pre-Performance Dinner at 6:00 p.m., co-chaired by Nancy A. Nasher and David J. - September 05, 2014 American soprano Rachel Willis-Sørensen, who last week won First Prize at the prestigious Operalia competition, will make her Met debut as Countess Almaviva in this December's performances of Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro. Willis-Sørensen will sing the role on December 4, 8, 12, 15, and 20 matinee, replacing the originally announced Amanda Majeski, who now sings the September and October performances of the opera.

- September 05, 2014 San Francisco Opera recently announced a cast change for the Company's season-opening new production of Vincenzo Bellini's Norma, presented September 5-30, 2014 at the War Memorial Opera House. American mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton--recent winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition--will make her Company debut as Adalgisa for five of the opera's seven performances today, September 5 and September 10, 14, 27 and 30. Ms. Barton replaces Daveda Karanas, who has withdrawn from the production for personal reasons. A casting update for the September 19 & 23 performances will be announced at a later date.
