- October 21, 2014 American tenor Jay Hunter Morris will replace Anthony Dean Griffey in Houston Grand Opera's world premiere production of A Christmas Carol, it was announced today by HGO Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers. Mr. Griffey has withdrawn for health reasons. The 90-minute opera, commissioned by HGO from composer Iain Bell and librettist Simon Callow, is written for a single singer performing the role of The Narrator. A Christmas Carol runs from December 5 through 21, 2014, at the Wortham Theater Center, and is suitable for ages 12 and up.

- October 17, 2014 Tenor Norman Reinhardt will sing the role of Ferrando in Houston Grand Opera's production of Così fan tutte, it was announced today by HGO Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers. He replaces Stephen Costello, who has withdrawn due to illness. Mr. Reinhardt is in Houston to perform the role of Cassio in Verdi's Otello and will play Ferrando concurrently. Otello opens October 24, and Cosi fan tutte opens October 31.

Principal Pops Conductor Bob Bernhardt will be leading the first half with marches and light classics, favorites of Arthur Fiedler, a 50-year conductor for the Boston Pops. Works include The Washington Post, the George M. Cohan Salute, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20, and Rachmaninoff's popular 2nd piano concerto. Michael Chertock, a featured guest with the Boston Pops for several years, will be featured on piano.

- October 17, 2014 Soprano Anna Netrebko was AWOL. Tenor Marcello Giordani wasn't there. Mezzo Isabel Leonard didn't make it either. At least tenor Richard Tucker (1913-1975) had the best excuse for not being at Avery Fisher Hall on Sunday evening. But, as they say “the show must go on”--and the annual gala of The Richard Tucker Foundation certainly did, despite all the cancellations. Celebrating the famed singer, as well as showcasing the newly anointed winner of its top award, tenor Michael Fabiano, the evening was filled with many pleasures.

- October 15, 2014 San Francisco Opera presents the Company premiere of George Frideric Handel's comedy Partenope in six performances October 15-November 2, 2014 at the War Memorial Opera House. Winner of London's 2009 Olivier Award for 'Best New Production,' this production is directed by Christopher Alden with sets designed by Andrew Lieberman. Set in 1920s Paris, the production's surrealist aesthetic is inspired by the artwork of Dadaist Man Ray. Lyric soprano and baroque specialist Danielle de Niese stars in the title role opposite leading countertenor David Daniels, who thrilled audiences in 2011's Xerxes, as her suitor Arsace. Argentinean mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack is the crafty Rosmira, Arsace's scorned lover who attempts to use a cross-dressing disguise to enact her revenge. Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo makes his Company debut as another of Partenope's admirers, Armindo, and tenor Alek Shrader is Emilio. Grammy-nominated American conductor Julian Wachner makes his San Francisco Opera debut with these performances.

- October 15, 2014 A champion of music theatre in all its diversity, Toronto Operetta Theatrepresents the Canadian Premiere of the Spanish zarzuela, LA GRAN VIA by Chueca and Valverde onSunday, November 2, 2014 at 2 pm at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. Premiered at Teatro Felipe in 1886, this renowned zarzuela is a bold mixture of comic fantasy, social comment, political satire and the indelible music of Spain. The work was inspired by the creation of a gleaming new avenue in the heart of Madrid - La Gran Via – a thoroughfare that has become as famous as London's Piccadilly or Broadway in New York. “We have taken Chueca's short form zarzuela or genero chico” says Guillermo Silva-Marin, “and added well-known works from other zarzuela masters…just as was done during that time in Madrid.” The full afternoon will be a musical revue in the grand manner of the world's most exciting entertainment centres.

Performances will take place in Brevard, at the Porter Center on the campus of Brevard College, on June 25 and June 27, 2015, and in Asheville, at the Diana Wortham Theatre, on July 2 and July 5, 2015. All performances will occur during ALO's 2015 season and BMC's 2015 Summer Institute and Festival.
