Quinn Kelsey to Sing 'Giorgio Germont' in First Three Performances of the Met's LA TRAVIATA by BWW News Desk
- November 26, 2014 American baritone Quinn Kelsey will sing the role of Giorgio Germont in the first three performances of La Traviata on December 11, 16, and 19, replacing Ludovic Tézier who is ill. Tézier is expected to return to the role for the remaining performances.
Toronto Tenor Charles Sy Garners Win at COC's Annual Vocal Competition by BWW News Desk
- November 26, 2014 Toronto – Tenor Charles Sy of Toronto took home first prize and the Audience Choice Award at the Canadian Opera Company's Ensemble Studio Competition on November 25, 2014, at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The competition is the feature event of the COC's annual fundraising gala, Centre Stage, an evening dedicated to the discovery and celebration of the next generation of opera stars. Sy was selected from seven finalists to receive the $5,000 award. Baritone Dimitri Katotakis of Toronto, won the second prize of $3,000,and tenor Aaron Sheppard of St. John's, N.L.., was awarded the third prize of $1,500. In addition, Sy was selected by the audience as the winner of the Audience Choice Award, worth $1,500.

- November 26, 2014 LA Opera General Director Plácido Domingo announced updated details for the west coast premiere of John Corigliano's magnificently haunting 1991 opera,The Ghosts of Versailles, which receives its long awaited west coast debut on February 7 as the initial production of LA Opera'sFigaro Trilogy. Featuring a libretto by noted playwright William C. Hoffman, the opera is presented in a new production directed by Darko Tresnjak, a 2014 Tony Award winner, and it will be conducted by LA Opera Music Director James Conlon.
Houston Grand Opera to Honor Houston Ship Channel's Centennial in Song, 12/10 by BWW News Desk
- November 25, 2014 Houston, November 25, 2014—Houston Grand Opera's community collaboration initiative, HGOco, will present an original song cycle,On This Muddy Water: Voices from the Houston Ship Channel, in a series of free concerts beginning December 10, 2014. Presented in conjunction with the Houston Arts Alliance's Folklore and Traditional Arts Program's exhibition Stories of a Workforce: Celebrating the Centennial of the Houston Ship Channel, the songs will give voice to the men and women who make up the Houston Ship Channel's immense workforce. Composed by D. J. Sparr to a libretto by Janine Joseph and performed by mezzo-soprano Lauren Pastorek and baritone Heath Martin, On This Muddy Water will capture and explore stories from the history and tradition of the port through words and song. The concerts will take place on December 10, 17, January 7, and 21 at 5:30 p.m., with a reception following the December 10world premiere, all at the Julia Ideson Library. Each concert will be preceded by a brief conversation with a member of the Ship Channel community.

This marks a major milestone for the American soprano, and comes at a key moment in her burgeoning career. - November 24, 2014 When Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Steven Stucky's first opera - The Classical Style: An Opera (of Sorts) - premiered at the 2014 Ojai Music Festival, it was hailed as 'a dazzling display of inventiveness and broad comical delight' (San Francisco Chronicle) that, thanks to 'the bliss and beauty of the music' (San Jose Mercury News), 'proved unexpectedly moving' (Santa Barbara Independent). Composed to a libretto by MacArthur Fellow Jeremy Denk, Stucky's comic opera - a co-commission of Carnegie Hall, Cal Performances, and the Ojai and Aspen Music Festivals - is now set to receive its East Coast premiere. - November 24, 2014 San Francisco, November 24, 2014 – Acclaimed contemporary opera company Opera Parallèle will open its 2015 season with the premiere of a new production of Jake Heggie's landmark work Dead Man Walking—marking the 15th anniversary of one of the most widely performed operas of the 21st century—in three performances Friday and Saturday, February 20 and 21, 2015 at 8 pm and Sunday, February 22, 2015 at 2 pm at YBCA Theater in San Francisco.
