Francisco Brito Joins Canadian Opera Company's THE BARBER OF SEVILLE

The Canadian Opera Company regrets to announce that Romanian tenor Bogdan Mihai, who was scheduled to perform the role of Count Almaviva in Rossini's The Barber of Seville this May, has had to withdraw for personal reasons. Mihai was scheduled to sing three of the production's 12 performances. In his place, the COC has cast Argentine tenor Francisco Brito, who will make his Canadian debut. Brito shares the role of Count Almaviva with American tenor Alek Shrader who has been performing the role since the COC's production opened on April 17, 2015.

OPERA America, the national nonprofit service organization for opera, is pleased to announce it has awarded $300,000 in grants to nine opera companies through the third year of its Building Opera Audiences program, generously funded by the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation. This grant program seeks to support the efforts of North American opera companies to build informed, enthusiastic audiences for opera through innovative marketing projects. Fifty-four applications totaling over $2 million in requests were submitted, demonstrating the intense level of audience development activity across North America.

Soprano Talya Lieberman and baritone Edward Nelson, joined on piano by former San Francisco Opera Adler Fellow Allen Perriello end the 32nd season of the Schwabacher Debut Recitals on Sunday, May 3 at Temple Emanu-El's Martin Meyer Sanctuary. The Merola Opera Program alumni will present an eclectic program showcasing works by Nico Muhly, Francis Poulenc, Henry Purcell, Franz Schubert and Kurt Weill. This summer, On Site Opera (OSO) will present a new production that exemplifies the company's mission to stage operas in non-traditional locations ideally suited to the stories they tell. OSO will offer an immersive site-specific staging of Giovanni Paisiello's The Barber of Seville at the opulent Fabbri Mansion (House of the Redeemer) on New York City's Upper East Side. Conducted by the company's newly appointed Music Director, Geoffrey McDonald and directed by OSO's Co-Founder and Artistic Director, Eric Einhorn, the production will be updated to the early decades of the twentieth century (when the Fabbri Mansion was built) and staged in themansion's outdoor courtyard and library.

Artistic Director David Agler today announced the cast for the main evening operas in the forthcoming Wexford Festival, opening Wednesday, 21 October. A mixture of new and familiar voices makes up the 64-member company, comprising 20 principal roles, 32 chorus-members and 10 dancers. They hail from several different countries, including Ireland, Britain, South Africa, Canada, US, France, Italy, Australia and Malta. When including the creative teams, production team, orchestra and crew, the full company of this year's Festival is likely to be in excess of 200.

 Enrollment is now open for young people ages 8 -18 for Sarasota Youth Opera's 2015 Summer Camp to be held June 8 – June 26, 2015.  The annual three-week program will run Monday thru Friday from 9 am – 12:30pm for campers ages 8 – 10, and 10am – 4pmfor campers ages 11 – 18. The all-star duo of soprano Dorothea Roschmann and pianist Mitsuko Uchida collaborate on a recital program of love songs by Schumann and Berg at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage tonight, April 22 at 8:00 p.m. Ms. Roschmann and Ms. Uchida will perform Schumann's Liederkreis, Op. 39 -- the composer's passionate ode to his beloved wife Clara -- and his Frauenliebe und -- leben, Op. 42, a celebration of a woman's devotion to her husband, pairing those song cycles with Berg's fevered view of love in his Seven Early Songs.
Revival of Stravinsky's THE RAKE'S PROGRESS Opens 5/1 at the Met

Stravinsky's twentieth-century operatic masterpiece The Rake's Progress will return to the Met stage for a revival of three performances only, opening May 1 and continuing through May 9. Music Director James Levine leads the performances, with rising stars Paul Appleby and Layla Claire in the central roles of the carefree Tom Rakewell and his faithful sweetheart, Anne Trulove; Stephanie Blythe as Baba the Turk, the hot-tempered bearded lady whose life becomes entangled with Tom's; English bass Brindley Sherratt in his Met debut as Anne's father, Trulove; and Gerald Finley as Nick Shadow, the mysterious man who encourages Tom to trade respectability for a life of aimless pleasure.
