The Board of Directors of Florida Grand Opera (FGO) recently announced the appointment of Carla Albarran and George Riggs III as its newest members. Additionally both Mrs. Albarran and Mr. Riggs have been selected to join the Board's Executive Committee, with Mrs. Albarran serving as the Assistant Secretary and Mr. Riggs serving as the Assistant Treasurer.

Legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker (1920-1955) was “a genius who lived fast and died young, revolutionizing an art form in a few short years” (NPR). The Grammy Award-winning bebop legend is the subject of Charlie Parker's YARDBIRD, the first world premiere in almost four decades for Opera Philadelphia, recognized by Opera News as “one of the leading instigators of new work in the country.” The new chamber opera was created for American tenor Lawrence Brownlee, a nominee for the 2015 International Opera Male Singer of the Year Award, by composer Daniel Schnyder, whose “thrilling classical-tinged jazz blend…constantly pushes the envelope” (Jazz Times), to a libretto by award-winning poet and playwright Bridgette Wimberly. Directed by Ron Daniels under the leadership of Music Director Corrado Rovaris, Charlie Parker's YARDBIRD premieres in Opera Philadelphia's Aurora Series for Chamber Opera, crowning the company's 40th Anniversary Season with a five-performance run in the Kimmel Center's intimate Perelman Theater (June 5–14). Beginning with Verdi's La Traviata, starring Nino Machaidze and Plácido Domingo at 10am on Saturday, May 16, 2015, the weekly series hosted by KUSC's Duff Murphy will feature five performances from LA Opera's 2014/15 season and a special encore broadcast of Jules Massenet's Thaïs from the 2013/14 season. A season ago, when soprano Olga Peretyatko made her Met debut as Elvira in Bellini's I PURITANI, I marveled at her gorgeous voice and stamina, but noted that her inexperience in the role showed. I hoped for more from her when she got it under her belt. What a difference a year makes! As the heroine in a new production by Fabio Ceresa at the Teatro Regio in Turin, Italy (a co-venture with Maggio Musicale Fiorentino), she was, simply, wonderful, at the performance on April 19.
