BWW Review: Halloween Comes Early with Kallor's FRANKENSTEIN and Poe in Green-Wood Cemetery by Richard Sasanow
- October 14, 2018 I grew up with many versions of the Frankenstein story--some with greater nods to Mary Shelley's novel than others--spending Saturday afternoons being scared witless and loving every minute of it. But I was changed forever by Mel Brooks' YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, making it hard to come to the story of monster and master today with fresh eyes and ears, no matter how serious the intentions. But Gregg Kallor's SKETCHES FROM FRANKENSTEIN, which played last week in the catacombs of Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery, managed to do it.

In 2010, she undertook an eight year assignment managing people-to-people educational and humanitarian programs for Road Scholar in Cuba, where she acquired extensive knowledge about everyday life, the economy, agriculture, arts, education, and healthcare.

In partnership with Breaking Ground, New York City's largest provider of permanent supportive housing for the homeless, performances will feature a chorus made up of community members who have experienced homelessness. Tickets will be free, part of OSO's “Opera Free For All” initiative.

- October 11, 2018 Kathleen Turner will join the cast of Donizetti's comedy La Fille du Régiment at the Metropolitan Opera February 7–March 2, in the non-singing role of the Duchess of Krakenthorp. She will perform alongside Pretty Yende in the role of Marie, and Javier Camarena as Tonio. Stephanie Blythe will play the Marquise of Berkenfield, with Alessandro Corbelli and Maurizio Muraro sharing the role of Sergeant Sulpice. Laurent Pelly's staging will be conducted by Enrique Mazzola.

- October 10, 2018 Daniele Rustioni continues his success as Principal Conductor of the Opéra de Lyon this with a new production of Arrigo Boïto's verismo rarity Mefistofele. Following his memorable debut with the Ulster Orchestra in May 2017 and his critically-acclaimed return to the orchestra in August 2018, Rustioni again leads the Ulster Orchestra on November 16, 2018. This winter, Rustioni will make his long-awaited American orchestral debut when he leads the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in three performances of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 3, January 31–February 2, 2019.

If you live in New York, you might know the High Line, a modern elevated walkway built over abandoned railroad tracks that stretches from the West Village to the Westside Highway at 34th Street. It is a voyeur's paradise--but the production does the voyeuristic aspects one better. It's a whale of a show.

Based on Winston Graham's haunting novel, which also inspired the classic Alfred Hitchcock film, Marnie is conducted by Robert Spano in his Met debut and directed by Michael Mayer, who created the staging for the opera's world premiere at English National Opera in 2017.
