The Music Of Lena Horne
Starring Mary Wilson

Stormy Weather is a "living, breathing, biography" that combines story, song and images to give us a defining portrait of singer and civil-rights activist Lena Horne. From her Cotton Club glory days and the back lots of Hollywood studios to the glitzy but bigoted resorts of Las Vegas, this behind-the-scenes look at a true icon is as much a story of American-dream limitations as it is a masterful multi-media experience. Narrated by biographer James Gavin, thrilling arrangements include "Stormy Weather," "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Yesterday When I Was Young." "Stormy Weather is magnificent, gripping." - Liz Smith

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd
Lecturer: Lee Wolf
(Kravis Under Cover)
The Invention of Wings is based on a true story about two extraordinary women living in slaveholding Charleston, S.C. in the early to mid-19th century. Sarah and Angelina Grimke defy the boundaries and laws that rob both women and the slaves who serve them of their freedom and inalienable rights. Their courage and resilience cause them to become pariahs in both their community and far beyond, reviled by slaveholders and abolitionists alike. Kidd embellishes the tale by fictionalizing two other strong, resourceful women, Charlotte and Handful, mother and daughter who are slaves in the Grimke household. Their rebellion against the forces that brutalize and enslave them will enflame and move you. This novel of love, hate, friendship, alienation, inhumanity and heroism is truly inspirational.
