Announcing CCM's 2014-15 Concert Series

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) has announced initial details on its 2014-15 Concert Series. Encompassing over 50 different concerts, this series begins with a performance by the internationally acclaimed Ariel Quartet with legendary guest artist Menahem Pressler on Sept. 9, 2014, and concludes with a number of performances by CCM's Preparatory Department running May 1 - 9, 2015.
Highlights of CCM's 2014-15 concert series include:
- a performance of Brahms' Concerto for Violin and Cello featuring the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's Timothy Lees and Ilya Finkelshteyn,
- choral concerts celebrating the Shakespearean Quadricentennial,
- a Wind Orchestra tribute to Leonard Bernstein,
- a guest artist recital by renowned German countertenor Andreas Scholl,
- a joint faculty artist recital by CCM's two Naumburg gold medalists Awadagin Pratt and Soyeon Kate Lee,
- a rare stateside performance by the Cambridge-based Academy of Ancient Music,
- jazz concerts celebrating the music of Ray Charles and Duke Ellington,
- a guest artist recital by renowned pianist Stephen Hough co-presented with the Xavier University Classical Piano Series,
- a CCM Ballet Ensemble production of Stravinsky's Les Noces,
...and much more!
Several perennial favorites are also returning this season, including the Feast of Carols holiday concert, the Steel Drum Band's annual performance, the 18th PRISM showcase and the 10th installment of PIANOPALOOZA, which celebrates the piano concerti of Rachmaninoff.

The Ariel Quartet
Featuring guest artist Menahem Pressler, piano
Grand Prize winners at the 2006 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and 2014 recipients of the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award, the Ariel Quartet will open its 2014-15 CCM Concert Series with a performance featuring legendary pianist Menahem Pressler. Founding member and pianist of the Beaux Arts Trio, Pressler will join the Quartet for a performance of Brahms' majestic Piano Quintet in F Minor, Op. 34. The concert program will also include Haydn's String Quartet in G Major, Op. 76, No. 1; and Berg's String Quartet, Op. 3.

CCM's Choral Department inaugurates the Shakespeare Quadricentennial, a two-year commemoration of the playwright's birth and death through choral music - spanning his 450th birthday this past April 23, 2014 and culminating on April 23, 2016, the 400th anniversary of his death. Each choir offers a Shakespearean choral setting from the Renaissance through our own time. Featured works include Ralph Vaughan Williams' Three Shakespeare Songs from A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest, Matthew Harris' When Daffodils Begin To Peer from The Winter's Tale and Jaakko Mäntyjärvi's Double, Double, Toil and Trouble and Verdi's Witches' Chorus from Macbeth.

Renowned German countertenor Andreas Scholl has sung at major music festivals, opera houses and with symphony orchestras around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, Glyndebourne, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, among many others. At CCM, he will sing a recital of art songs, accompanied by his wife, pianist Tamar Halperin. Some of this repertoire is featured on their recent CD release, Wanderer.

Presented by the Friends of CCM and the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute World-renowned concert pianist and psychiatrist Richard Kogan takes the stage for a performance combining cherished works of Chopin with observations about the relationship between the composer's mind, his creative motivations and his music. A frequent performer with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Kogan is a Juilliard-trained pianist and an alumnus of Harvard Medical School.

CCM presents a unique joint-recital by faculty artists and Naumburg International Piano Competition Gold Medalists Soyeon Kate Lee (first prize in 2010) and Awadagin Pratt (first prize in 1992). In existence since 1926, the Naumburg Competition is one of the most distinguished music competitions in the world. Lee's appointment to the Department of Piano now gives CCM the rare distinction of having two Naumburg Gold Medalists on faculty!

The 450 members of the Cincinnati Children's Choir, including all seven CCM resident choirs and 12 satellite choirs from across the Tri-State area, will celebrate the artistry of youth, performing variety repertoire including traditional, folk and world music.

BEARCAT PIANO FESTIVAL GUEST ARTIST RECITAL
Sergei Babayan, piano
Artist-in-Residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Sergei Babayan has been hailed for the immediacy, sensitivity and depth of his interpretations. His performances reveal an emotional intensity and bold energy. Babayan is known for his innovative programming, often including modern works by composers such as Lutoslawski, Ligeti and Arvo Pärt, and extending the boundaries of mainstream repertoire for which he continues to be acclaimed, excelling in Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Schumann as much as the Russian heritage of Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and Prokofiev.

The Inaugural Father John Heim, S.J. Concert
CCM's Bearcat Piano Festival welcomes extraordinary pianist, composer, writer, teacher, painter and 2001 MacArthur Fellowship-recipient Stephen Hough to the stage for the inaugural Father John Heim Concert. Hough's program will include Debussy's La plus que lente, Estampes, L'isle joyeux and Children's Corner and Chopin's Ballade
No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23, Ballade No. 2 in F major, Op. 38, Ballade No. 3 in A-flat major, Op. 47 and Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52. Appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2014 for his services to the art of music, Hough's concert appearance is being presented in cooperation with the Xavier University Classical Piano Series, directed by Polina Bespalko.

The Ariel Quartet brings its CCM Concert Series to a stunning conclusion with a program featuring Haydn's String Quartet No. 63 in B flat Major, Op. 76, No. 4 ("Sunrise"); Bartók's String Quartet No. 5, Sz. 102; and Brahms' String Quartet No. 3 in B-flat Major, Op. 67.

Celebrate the art of the piano with the tenth installment of this popular concert, showcasing CCM's most spectacular student pianists, with special appearances by CCM's faculty artists. In honor of the tenth annual Pianopalooza, the Concert Orchestra will join CCM's pianists for performances of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1 in F-Sharp Minor, Op. 1; Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43; and Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 30.

DAVE BRUBECK'S THE GATES OF JUSTICE

Originally premiered in 1969 for the dedication of Cincinnati's Rockdale Temple, Dave Brubeck's The Gates of Justice was a co-commission by CCM and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, with a premiere conducted by Erich Kunzel. The text is drawn from the Hebrew Bible, speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Negro Spirituals, the writings of Hillel and lyrics by the composer's wife, Iola Brubeck.

Premiered in Paris in 1923, Stravinsky's Les Noces captures the scenes and flavor of a Russian peasant wedding through the unique texture of four pianists, six percussionists, solo quartet and chorus.

Based on the 1967 film of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of Millie Dillmount, a small-town girl who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love-a thoroughly modern aim! Winner of six 2002 Tony Awards including Best Musical, this comic pastiche promises to delight audiences with its modern ways.
