Séjourné's Concerto for Marimba and Strings, marimbist Ji Su Jung won the 43rd annual Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition, which earned her a gold medal, a $25,000 prize and a solo performance at Jones Hall with the Houston Symphony at the Donor and Subscriber Appreciation Concert on Wednesday, July 11 at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Associate Conductor Robert Franz.

In celebration of international Make Music Day, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra will share a global broadcast of its performance of Verdi's Requiem on 21 June live from the Sydney Opera House.  With the support of Create NSW, ABC Classics, Sydney Opera House Creative Learning, Music Australia and the Australian Music Association, the livestream will be the flagship event in Australia's first participation in the worldwide music festivities.

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra's Sound Investment commissioning program, established to engage audiences in developing a new piece of music composed especially to suit its unparalleled musical talents, features Los Angeles-based Sarah Gibson as its 2018-19  Sound Investment composer. Her work will be world premiered at LACO's orchestral concerts on Saturday, January 26, 8 pm, at Glendale's Alex Theatre, and Sunday, January 27, 2019, 7 pm, at Royce Hall following several exclusive salons for Sound Investment members. Gibson is the latest in a line of esteemed LACO Sound Investment Composers, among them Ellen Reid, Matthew Aucoin, Ted Hearne, Hannah Lash, Andrew Norman, Timo Andres, Derek Bermel and others dating back to the first Sound Investment commission in 2001.

Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) conducts Mahler's Symphony No. 4, Mozart's Exsultate, jubilate, and American Maverick Carl Ruggles's Evocations at Carnegie Hall, Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, in his first performance with The MET Orchestra, Tuesday, June 5 at 8:00 p.m. This will be the first time that The MET Orchestra performs a work by Ruggles. The program's featured soloist is soprano Pretty Yende, who sings in Exsultate, jubilate and the finale of the Mahler symphony.

National Alliance For Audition Support To Launch With Three-Day Intensive

The National Alliance for Audition Support (NAAS) will launch its first activities aimed at increasing diversity in American orchestras with a three-day Audition Intensive, June 6-8 at the New World Center in Miami Beach, FL. Eighteen pre-to-early professional Black and Latinx string musicians have been selected by The Sphinx Organization to participate in the three-day Intensive.

Conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto concludes a busy 2017 – 18 season of critically acclaimed performances with orchestras across the United States, Mexico, and Europe, including several important debuts. In his 12th season as Music Director of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO), Prieto led the orchestra in its Carnegie Hall debut with a program honoring composer Philip Glass. Earlier in the season, Prieto made debuts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He builds on this success with a contract extension with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and by furthering his commitment to nurturing and guiding young musicians in performances in New York and Miami with Carnegie Hall's NYO2 initiative as well as the Orchestra of the Americas tour of Europe.

The New York Philharmonic announces Foreign Bodies, a one-night-only multidisciplinary event conducted and hosted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, concluding his tenure as The Marie-Jos e Kravis Composer-in-Residence. The concert, Friday, June 8, 2018, at 8:00 p.m., will feature Esa-Pekka Salonen's Foreign Bodies, accompanied by the World Premiere of a live video installation by Tal Rosner; Dan el Bjarnason's Violin Concerto, with Pekka Kuusisto in his New York Philharmonic debut; and Obsidian Tear, a dance work choreographed by Wayne McGregor performed by members of the Boston Ballet (Philharmonic debut) and set to Mr. Salonen's Nyx and Lachen verlernt. Foreign Bodies will be casual and multi-sensory; drinks and conversation will flow as attendees mingle with the performers, who will give additional impromptu performances throughout the event.

Acclaimed American composer Debra Kaye's Howland Quartet (String Quartet No. 2), commissioned and presented by the Howland Chamber Music Circle, will celebrate its world premiere on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 4:00 PM.  The concert will also include Beethoven's Cavatina  from String Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 130, Britten's Playful Pizzicato from Simple Symphony, Op. 4,  Mendelssohn's Adagio-Allegro vivace from String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor, Philip Glass' Quartet No. 2, and Pannonia Boundless by Aleksandra Vrebalov. The 25TH Anniversary Friends Concert program, featuring the Voxare String Quartet, will take place at the historic Howland Cultural Center, 477 Main Street, Beacon, NY at 4:00 PM.
American Classical Orchestra Announces 2018-2019 Season

American Classical Orchestra (ACO) today announces its programming for the 2018-19 season, the orchestra's 34th year of presenting historically accurate, engaging, and educational concerts led by Artistic Director and Founder Thomas Crawford. ACO performs four concerts presented in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and two salon concerts in a private venue. From June 5-24, 2018, Orchestra of St. Luke's will present Facets of Brahms, the second iteration of the Ensemble's chamber music festival. The three programs, featuring the Orchestra's core 23-member St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble, are curated to highlight different perspectives on the musical life of the composer and include Seasons of Brahms, June 5, 6, and 10; Brahms & The Schumanns, with pianist Pedja Muzijevic, June 12, 13, and 17; and Brahms & the Search for a Symphony, June 19, 20, and 24. Discussions led by noted scholars, and musicians will take place prior to each Brahms program.
