ASPECT Presents Archduke Rudolph: Beethoven's Pupil And Patron, Feat. Illustrated Talk By Ignat Solzhenitsyn

The ASPECT Foundation for Music & Arts continues its third New York City season of illuminating performances with Archduke Rudolf: Beethoven's Pupil and Patron on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at 7:30pm at Bohemian National Hall. Russian-American pianist and conductor Ignat Solzhenitsyn is joined by violinist Korbinian Altenberger and cellist Na-Young Baek for a program of works Beethoven dedicated to his most significant patron and composition student, Archduke Rudolf of Austria: the Violin Sonata No.10 in G major, Op.96 and Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 97 “Archduke.”

The McCallum Theatre is tuning up for the 7th annual concert by the McCallum Theatre Concert Band, with conductor and McCallum Theatre President & CEO Mitch Gershenfeld, on Sunday, March 24, at 3:00pm. Highlights of this year's concert will be a performance of the beloved 'Carnival of the Animals' by Saint-Saens featuring pianist Jeffrey Siegel and a new text written and performed by David Gonzalez, and special guest appearances by Gavin MacLeod (narrator) and former TEN Tenor Chad Hilligus (guest vocalist). And, after the concert, there is free ice cream for everyone! I had the chance to catch up with Maestro Gershenfeld to get a glimpse behind the scenes of this season's concert. Here are a few excerpts from that conversation:
American Classical Orchestra Announces Winner Of Sfzp Fortepiano Competition, Juilliard Student David Belkovski

​​​​​​​ American Classical Orchestra (ACO) announces that David Belkovski, current Masters of Music in Historical Performance student at The Juilliard School, has been named winner of the first annual Sfzp International Fortepiano Competition co-sponsored by American Classical Orchestra and the Academy of Fortepiano Performance in Hunter, New York. Second prize has been awarded to University of Michigan student Gabriel Merrill-Steskal and an Honorable Mention to Cornell University student Shin Hwang.

The Tetzlaff Trio Performs Schumann And Dvorak At The Wallis This April

The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts presents The Tetzlaff Trio performing Schumann's consummate Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 63, paired with Dvo k's remarkable masterpiece Trio No. 3 in F minor, Op. 65, on Friday, April 26, 2019, 7:30 pm, at The Wallis' Bram Goldsmith Theater. The trio, featuring siblings Christian Tetzlaff, violin, and Tanja Tetzlaff, cello, and Lars Vogt, piano, are touring North America for the first time in three years. They bring polish and passion to every performance, according to the New York Times. A free pre-concert Prelude at 6:30 pm, which includes a complimentary glass of wine provided by The Henry Wine Group, features Classical KUSC's Brian Lauritzen in conversation about the evening's program with the artists. This concert is made possible with generous support from Wendy and Ken Ruby.

Grammy Award-nominated orchestral collective The Knights presents a wide-ranging program at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall on Wednesday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m., featuring music from the Baroque era through today, and from East to West. The concert features the US premiere of Canons and Overtones by Donnacha Dennehy, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall for its 125 Commissions Project. The piece was written to mark the 20th anniversary of Dublin's Crash Ensemble and plays with layered melodies to create overtones, blurring the distinction between timbre and harmony.
Daniel Kellogg Named New President Of Young Concert Artists

This follows the incredible 58-year-tenure of Founder and current Director, Susan Wadsworth, who will continue as Creative Consultant through 2020-2021 helping to plan the 60th Anniversary of Young Concert Artists.

Pacific Symphony Announces Richard Kaufman's Final Season As Principal Pops Conductor

Pacific Symphony Music Director Carl St.Clair announced today that Richard Kaufman will conclude his tenure as principal Pops conductor in May 2020 and will be named principal Pops conductor laureate beginning in 2020-21. Kaufman has served in the role of principal Pops conductor since 1990. During the 2019-20 season, Kaufman will conduct two SummerFest concerts and four Pops concerts.

California Pops Orchestra, celebrating it's 30th season as the country's only all-request pops orchestra, joins forces with the Black Tie Big Band to perform Swingtime at the Pops at Flint Center for the Performing Arts. The Orchestra Now (TON) begins its spring season at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall on Tuesday, March 26 at 7:30 pm. The concert will present works by Brahms and Grieg with pianist Alessandro Taverna led by distinguished guest conductor Fabio Luisi, music director of the Zurich Opera and principal conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. Following solo and concerto performances at Queens College's Karol Rathaus Festival last month, Polish-Canadian pianist Daniel Wnukowski (vnoo-koff'-skee) further champions the music of this long-neglected Galician-Jewish composer with the launch of a recording cycle of Karol Rathaus's complete works for solo piano. The project, spanning four volumes on Toccata Classics, is an extension of Mr. Wnukowski's advocacy for music suppressed by the Nazi regime, and all of the works on Volume 1 appear on recording for the first time.
