GVO Performs Orchestral Brilliance Feat. George Curran In Brubeck's Prague Concerto

The Greenwich Village Orchestra (GVO) continues its 2018-2019 season with Orchestral Brilliance, led by Music Director Barbara Yahr, on Sunday, April 7, 2019 at 3:00pm at All Saints Church. The program features New York Philharmonic bass trombonist George Curran as soloist in Chris Brubeck's Prague Concerto; Richard Strauss's lush, romantic Suite from Der Rosenkavalier; and Debussy's impressionistic Nocturnes led by Assistant Conductor Eric Mahl.

Bloomingdale School of Music (BSM)  is pleased to host 2018-19 Exploring the Metropolis Composer in Residence Taylor Brook in a free workshop for young composers on the use of electronics on March 5, 2019 at 7:00 pm. Featured as part of the event will be Taylor's composition, 'Alluvium.' The workshop will be held at BSM's David Greer Recital Hall located at the school's home site located at 323 West 108th Street, between Broadway and Riverside Drive in Manhattan.
Pianist Mitsuko Uchida Returns To Carnegie Hall For Three Concerts This Spring

Renowned pianist Mitsuko Uchida returns to Carnegie Hall for three concerts this spring in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. On Friday, March 29 at 8:00 p.m. she joins the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (with whom she has been an Artistic Partner since 2016) for Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 19 in F Major, K. 459 and Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor, K. 466, leading both works from the keyboard. The orchestra also performs Alban Berg's Three Pieces from the Lyric Suite (arr. for string orchestra) led by concertmaster Matthew Truscott.

Hoff-Barthelson Music School presents a special concert and “meet the instruments” party for children ages 4-9 and their adults, featuring a performance of Sergei Prokofiev's enchanting classic “Peter and the Wolf.” Performed by members of Hoff-Barthelson's exceptional faculty, the concert will be presented at 1:15 pm and again at 3:15 pm on Sunday, March 24, 2019, at the School, 25 School Lane, Scarsdale. Artistic Director Mathis Huber of Austria's recreation-GROSSES ORCHESTER GRAZ announced today following this evening's concert performance that American-Taiwanese conductor Mei-Ann Chen has been appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the 17-year-old orchestra. The appointment extends through the 2021-22 season, beginning September 2019.

Praised by The New York Times as 'poignant ... a monument to the courage of one man to foster hope among prisoners with little other solace,' Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terez n will be performed by Pacific Symphony on April 16, 2019 at 8 p.m. at the Ren e and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall (600 Town Center Drive) in Costa Mesa, CA. The 'extraordinarily beautiful and moving' concert/drama commemorates the courageous Jewish prisoners in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp during World War II who performed Verdi's Requiem 16 times, as an act of defiance and resistance to their Nazi captors. Defiant Requiem is a complete live performance of Verdi's Requiem interspersed with historic film, testimony from survivors and narration that tells this tale of audacious bravery. For this performance, Murray Sidlin will conduct the full Verdi Requiem with the soloists, Pacific Chorale and Pacific Symphony.

The Kurt Weill Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Jesse Leong as the recipient of the Julius Rudel/Kurt Weill Conducting Fellowship. Established in 2015 to honor Rudel's extraordinary artistic achievements and dedication to the music of Kurt Weill, this award enables a young conductor in the early stages of a career to assist a master conductor in the preparation and performance of a work by Weill or Marc Blitzstein and expand his or her knowledge of their works. The fellowship carries a stipend of $10,000.

Pianist Kirill Gerstein has long championed the music of Ferruccio Busoni (1866–1924), and this spring marks his most ambitious engagement with the composer's work—a live recording of Busoni's monumental Piano Concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and men of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, conducted by Sakari Oramo. The album, whose ties to Boston also extend to Mr. Gerstein and the composer himself, is released by Myrios Classics digitally on Friday, March 1 and on disc in North America on Friday, March 15.
